Firefighters Wore Gear Containing “Forever Chemicals.” The Forest Service Knew and Stayed Silent for Years. As early as 2021, government officials were alerted to the presence of potentially dangerous chemicals known as PFAS in pants used by wildland firefighters, according to emails obtained by ProPublica.

Tough article that is already getting a lot of commentary from the wildland fire community. This is looking like a pattern from agency leadership--they downplayed smoke exposure over the years and now we find out the same thing happened with PFAS in PPE clothing.

Congratulations! In my experience the transition from research to professor _is_ a transition, but a worthwhile one! Excited to see what you and your lab will do next!

Good photos of a rather bleak state. It always amazes me how quickly the oaks can resprout.

Any updates on the fire behavior in Teakettle?

My colleague and I were talking about this topic yesterday. There are some good ideas in the article. Financial incentives are effective. Why not provide discounted publication fees to those who have previously reviewed? Something along the lines of a frequent flyer program.

Back from a week of field work to kick off summer data collection. Lots of beauty, as always, but the delayed post-fire mortality mediated by bark beetles in the large ponderosa pines was disheartening.

This article misrepresents active management with examples of poor management. Most active management on public lands in the US is focused on maintaining and restoring ecological integrity. Selective logging of large trees is incredibly uncommon nowadays, And prohibited in many areas.

Very well stated summary of the history of the United States scientific leadership and of the impact of this administration in a very short time.

Atmospheric CO2 has passed 430 parts per million.

The last time atmospheric CO2 was at 430 ppm was during the ancient Pliocene Era, three to five million years ago, and humans didn’t exist.

If you have data posted on the USFS research data archive make sure you have a copy backed up. The data archive may be taken down.

“The FS Research Data Archive offers a catalog of hundreds of research datasets funded by Forest Service R&D or by the Joint Fire Science Program”
