Thank you, a really moving piece today. As a side note I love it when Inventories set off another little one of my musical memories. In this case, 'where else do I know that Orton quote from?'. Of course it's open.spotify.com/track/631byi...

Is Hachette UK separate? If not, I wonder if there are any signs of this here?
The correct answer is clearly that it's the run of singles/EPs from late 83 to end 85

That sounds about right time-wise, we saw them in Nottingham in a not very good venue. The comparison wasn't a criticism btw!
I saw B&S once, can't remember when (we went to see Elliot Smith who was supporting) and I thought 'they remind me of The June Brides'!
Very fond memories of the jukebox in Corbieres which I remember as being free?
There used to be a 'coffee shop' in a phone box in Nottingham. It wasn't there for long ..
Looking forward to it
There used to be regular out in pb review sections but I think they may have disappeared. Different times...
24 years a bookseller, I could talk up a book. Still miss the proofs and swaps.
I think the only reason I have an opinion about hbs is that the current way of publishing means I read fewer newly published books than I used to or would like to (ie none unless they are in Waterstones half price this week offer. So that would be none). Also don't get the loathing
It used to be said that some authors wouldn't allow a pb first contract but that was some time ago? The idea of hb as a marketing tool for a pb is mad if you have to wait a year. Cinema to tv for films now seems to be a few weeks
I think this is still a really interesting question and a lot of the answer is 'because that's what we do'. The reviews point is a good one but circular: reviews are of hbs because they are published in hb first because reviews are of hb and so on.
I absolutely love this film, thank you
Pretty much my top 10 too
Agreed. My wife listened to the last album before me and said it was just a bit middle aged man. She's quite right and unfortunately it's just a bit dull to listen to. I fear his best days might be behind him?
I think maybe YMG have a bit more post punk hipster mystery while Weekend were a bit smoother and jazzier which hasn't always been perceived as so cool. Definitely no disrespect to YMG intended
Live at Ronnie Scotts by Weekend 1983. The album cover has a drawing of the band in white silhouettes on a grey background. The reverse shows special guest Keith Tippett on the piano
Slightly off topic but this week's Inventory reminded me how much I loved (and still do) Weekend, Alison Statton's next thing. I was a bit young for YMG first time round but this and La Variete still sound great
Fabulous book. Thank you
Here's a radical suggestion. Why not have different channels and stations trying to serve different audiences/viewers rather than trying to make them all the bleeding same
Inventory and Auditory work really well together, especially in this great piece on Julie Covington. My listening will always tend to Cramps rather than Covington but this is brilliantly done
Old BBC vs new BBC
I know it's always been a programme for ' big personalities ' but it has got worse in the last few years, hasn't it
Now playing and very much enjoying
That is a brilliant cover. I've got this 60s Penguin one which I think is also pretty good
Fantastic book. This is my proof copy, was this cover used in real life?
