a screenshot of a google search for "nearest star" with a pop-up asking if you'd like to "see results closer to you?"
i don't think that'll make the result any more precise, but sure

Artemis II Return NASA's Orion spacecraft carrying Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch from NASA, along with Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen from the CSA (Canadian Space Agency), splashes down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, California, at 5:07 p.m. PDT, (8:07 p.m. EDT) on Friday, April 10, 2026. The Artemis II test flight launched on Wednesday, April 1, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to begin its 10-day journey around the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to build on our foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars. NASA’s Landing and Recovery team and the U.S. military are coordinating efforts to extract the Artemis II crew from the Orion spacecraft. Credit: NASA/Josh Valcarcel

I'm a relief crossing guard, filling in as needed at schools in Centretown, Hintonburg, Glebe and OOS. If you're wondering how long it takes drivers to return to their aggressive ways after a deadly hit-and-run, the answer is less than 8 days.
Yay! Congrats!!
New 225-m diameter lunar crater imaged by LRO, incidence angle 38°. Image width 950 meters, north is up.
A new 225-meter (740-foot) crater appeared on the Moon while nobody was looking. NASA's lunar orbiter imaged the dramatic aftermath.
Such large impacts are once-in-a-century events. This one happened in the spring of 2024. 🔭🧪

Catching up on Round 2:
13 is back to her usual high scoring ways and has retaken the lead with 44 points. I’m following in second with 41, while 17 did well to hit 38 points given a significantly depleted right side of his bracket.

It may sound shocking to hear a crossing guard was critically injured in a hit and run by the driver of a black Ford F-150 - but honestly if you've been paying attention at all you're probably not that shocked.
That's why we demand better - for our kids, their protectors, and all our neighbours.
We missed the last two nights due to life being busy, but we’re all caught up now!
Things weren’t looking great for me or 17 after a shaky night 3 for both, but an unexpectedly poor showing from 13 on night 4 and I’ve somehow taken a slim lead with 23 points, while the kids have 22 each.

A photo of the view from the top of La Reserve on a beautiful sunny day. The snow is well groomed and you can see the chairlift on the left, some trees on the right and Lac Ouareau in the distance.
A photo of the view from Mont Blanc on an overcast day. Ski chalets can be spotted between the trees, with the village beyond. The Laurentian mountains can be seen stretching back into the distance.
A photo of a very snowy day on Mont Tremblant. Snowboarders get ready in front of snow covered trees to the left. The chairlift is on the right. Everything is heavily encrusted in snow.
Another snowy Tremblant photo. The trees on both sides of the trail are weighed down with snow and you can see mountains through low clouds in the distance.
A little snowboarding, year 2 update: Today was the last day of the weekly program during which I had occasional lessons, improved a lot and had tons of fun! I still can’t keep up with my kids (who just keep getting faster) but sometimes they hang back with me ❤️🏂
Also, you can’t beat the views!
After the second night of Round 1, 13 has taken a slight lead over her brother and I gain a little ground to tighten the field.
Points are now 13-12-11

We’re here! We’re here! We did miss following along live tonight, but caught up shortly after the final battle.
Early standings have the kids tied with 6 points each, while I struggled and only have 4 (and I’m very sad for the lynx, who I had advancing pretty far)

A photo of two skaters on a frozen canal at night. The skaters are skating away from the camera and the ice is very chopped up and wet in places.
It was slushy and slow going, but we finally got to skate to dinner before the end of the season!
Ottawa needs more buses. We also need more dedicated lanes - to keep buses out of traffic and on schedule.
Bus lanes can cut trip times in half and are badly needed on arteries like Bank, Carling, Baseline, Richmond and Rideau to speed up key routes like the 6, 7, 11, 85 and 88.
we didn't finish denazification. we didn't finish desegregation. we didn't finish reconstruction. every opportunity for transformative change was deliberately sabotaged by american leaders who knew their wealth would not survive a world freed from eugenics, white supremacy, and war profiteering.
A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.
museums are cool because the people who work there are like look at this neat thing and you're like wow that is neat and you just do it over and over again until it is time to go
I have a theory that those of us who were raised on IRC or AIM are absolutely insufferable in Slack to those who were not, because instead of writing a three-paragraph thing, we'll break that up into 15 comments.
Anything less than abolishing ICE is unacceptable. I don't want to hear people talk about training these motherfuckers or throwing more money at them. The entire institution needs to be permanently disbanded. Do not let politicians sell you on anything less.
Day 1, Year 2 of snowboarding!
Chaperoned the bus for the kids’ lessons today, I’ll be taking my lessons on Wednesdays, but chaperoning means free lift tickets, so I finally got to test my new board (no more rentals!) Yay!
Warm out, so it was slushy then icy, but still had a lot of fun! 🏂
A photo of an orange bearded dragon sitting on red sandstone blocks and facing the camera, with her front legs folded as if she is leaning on a desk, ready to negotiate an important contract.
Pekoe will see you in her office now
I could do this for a few bands—Garbage & Metric for sure, probably a few others, but I’d have to think on it (I definitely saw a bunch of smaller bands an unreasonable number of times in the 90s, but the details are foggy now)
A photo of an orange bearded dragon basking on a rock. Her mouth is slightly open to regulate her temperature, making it look like she is smiling for a posed headshot.
A nice smile for Pekoe’s formal portrait (little teefs!)
ICEBERG!
She remains deeply disappointed that we no longer open the door for her
A line graph showing trick or treaters to our house. 2024 (in green) hit 59, and lead most of the way over 2025's 52, which had rain to start the night. The Salem high (53), low (20), and average (~37) shown in grey. The x axis is labeled from 17:30 to 20:30, the range of ToT times in both cities.
The all important Halloween tradition of graphing the trick or treaters we had this year vs last year and our low, average, and high at the previous house in Salem, MA.

A lot of comments on Mars rovers or Moon landings, but it's important to remember that the planet NASA studies most is Earth. This is less about cutting flashy things like moonwalks and more about keeping communities in the dark on climate, weather, agriculture, pollution, natural hazards, and more.
