Oh god, the absolute worst is pushing new features as the default flow. Sheets now seems to throw so many (un)helpful suggestions whenever you make a new sheet that it not only takes longer to load but also takes a bunch of clicks to dismiss popups & steals keyboard focus away from eg naming the doc

Is this not one of those things where you never notice it when it’s done right though?
But yeah, usually super frustrating when it isn’t, even more so when there’s no way to actually manually override the default anticipation
The RNG part of the progression (& unlocking new symbols etc) was fine imho, but things like “getting a bigger health bar” over multiple runs just makes it feel like there’s no chance at all of beating certain bosses without going through some obligatory grind to do that first
Yeah, definitely felt this with Slots & Daggers recently. For me personally I like it when the meta progression opens up new mechanics (especially unanticipated ones) but it feels grating when it’s just number inflation & you know you just have to grind a bit more before beating the next boss etc
Hi everybody, just wanted to let you all know that for various (mostly good!) reasons, my "ad hoc" consultancy hours will be reducing significantly for the nearby future.
I have 1.5 slot available for retainer consultancy, and I will obviously keep free hours available for marginalized devs.
Totally. I think I totally scrapped & redid Ozy’s multiplayer code twice? Both times involving fairly large refactors of a ton of core systems. Was quite pleased with the eventual conceptual framework that tied it all together but even that buckled a little in the push to ship the last few features.
Also half the time when I do start trying to implement content & card mechanics etc I then realise that my “perfect system” really isn’t anywhere near as perfect as I’d imagined, lol :-)
100% agree. Though personally I’m also quite prone to spending so much time trying to architect the perfect underlying system & running out of steam before actually getting to the mechanics I wanted to test in the first place… though that may just be me!
Yup, it can be so hard to draw the line sometimes between “quick & dirty to test an idea” vs “not so dirty that you have to redo everything constantly”…
VERY exciting update!
Another anonymous donor just offered to match the next $50,000 in donations to @freeourfeeds.com!

The movie poster for Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan
Finally, a reason to go to the cinema.
If you’ve not been to the cinema for a while because there hasn’t been anything that seems to justify the expense… go see Sinners. It’s a masterpiece. A hot sweaty melting pot of a film, dripping with themes, originality, richness, character, heart, voice & soul with great music to boot.
A steam capsule image of a bronze-age emperor sitting against a vast landscape, looking on dispassionately while a city burns behind them and the sun rises. The game’s title, OZYMANDIAS is shown prominently in the lower half.
Also a key inspiration behind (and the name of) the first indie game I ever worked on!

Name a TV show you’re positive no one remembers but you…
Am truly honoured to see Ozy on such an excellent list! Many shared favourites & a few “new” games I’ll definitely be checking out as well :-) Thank you! 🙏
Really love that so many places now have local weekly board game meet ups that you can just turn up to. Great to meet new people if you don’t know anyone locally, though kind of fascinated & amused that no matter where you are in the world, the most popular game seems to always be Secret Hitler…
Some of my favourite game dev & game-dev-adjacent books at the front here. Anyone got recommendations for others I should check out?
Excited to be flying to Lisbon this evening & spending a week working from somewhere new (and warmer!)
Anyone got any tips or recommendations?
Woah!! Hello everyone! Feel like I need a new intro!
I’m Biggles, previously tech lead on Ozymandias & Harvest Hunt, now Creative Director of a new indie studio, Bravo Bravo. We’re an experienced team working on our first title, an unannounced streamlined strategy game - publishers hit me up!

Ah, I do really need to blow some cobwebs off this account, huh! There is a very basic demo of Drift Vector up on Steam but no plans currently to develop the game further. May revisit one day :-)
Currently working on a new unannounced strategy game with a fantastic team, can’t wait to announce it!
Hi! Would love to be added to this :-)

PURE & Split/Second!
(May be slightly biased, my first ever game dev job involved implementing the haptics on PURE…)
