I’m flying to Panama later this summer *just* to bring back specimens so our non-citizen lab member doesn’t have to. We are fully permitted and have been doing this for years, but it’s different now

I often use a collapsible net without any extra handle, but I also have handle sections of various sizes. Failing that I often travel with a backpacking backpack in place of a suitcase which is also quite convenient for moving between locations with my luggage and accommodates a full length handle.

Sometimes you snap a photo and you debate whether to share it for hours. 🪶

Enjoy and nurture your mental and physical health, they can be gone in a moment. We all take them for granted when we are young. Know that you will never feel like a real grownup, you just look older but in your head you’re still ~25. The thing you put off until you have time never happens.

Surely even if this is real they don’t want to scrub the word “gender”

Is this even real? Does the government have the power to tell publishers what words they can use?

I know it’s a bad photo but I had the pleasure of seeing a Spectacled Owl today in Panama

I hope you just suddenly had the urge to wish him well and this is not indicative that something is wrong

Phylogenomic Insights into the Evolution and Origin of Nematoda Abstract. The phylum Nematoda represents one of the most cosmopolitan and abundant metazoan groups on Earth. In this study, we reconstructed the phylogenom

Our paper on the phylogeny of Nematoda 🪱came out on the last day of 2024 in @systbiol.bsky.social. Well at least the link is, the PDF will come later...

What started off as a collaboration invitation to design UCE probes snowballed building a phylogeny of the whole phylum using BUSCOs...

Amazing. Did yall include any species that are commensal with halictid bees? We have some people working on these nematodes that live a big chunk of their lives inside the Dufours gland of our bees and they’re super interesting

An anatomically realistic wheel bug on a penny wheel bike. The bug has prominent wheel shaped spines on it's back and a little bowler hat.

Don’t know what you’re taking but I’m on Lexapro and it took about 8 days before I sensed any difference and then I had to up my dose considerably (I started very low) to get it where I needed it, but it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. Best of luck!!

I was having a hard time scrolling and being engaged here on Bluesky and I couldn’t figure it out. I switched to dark mode and now I find it much easier to engage with.

Maybe this is useless or common sense to others but I tend to stay with default settings. If you’re like me give dark mode a try.

You’ve just discovered you were emptying the vacuum cleaner wrong your whole life and when you finally do it correctly you find something in there you had been missing for years

I feel a kind of powerful that can only come from completely organizing and labeling every single box in a -80 freezer from the past 10 years 💪

This is my attempt to build a wild bee-researcher starter pack for folks to find awesome people doing awesome wild bee research!
Feel free to suggest yourself as I'm sure this'll start out as a pack of my collaborators and other admired researchers!

I love that basically every answer is different

Actually, Kim Russel had a set of transects she was working every year for ages in that area, not sure if she still is but 100% email her. Rae has grad students that sometimes do work in the Pine Barrens etc. Definitely reach out

Are you based near Medford? I don’t do a lot there. I primarily just go there to collect one species that’s a sand nesting specialist. I do a lot more work around Princeton. Our lab is more comparative genomics than ecology based though. Do you know Rae Winfree at Rutgers? Might be a better fit

Haha I totally forgot about this. I just tried again and asked it to make me older and fatter. I think ChatGPT is just too horny

Oooh I love this one. I actually do halictid fieldwork in Medford sometimes but not in December….

I didn’t know about your website before, but as someone who dissects a lot of bee brains I really appreciate it. Thanks!

I failed to get a grant for a cool project. Time to start looking for a wealthy benefactor :)
