What we do know is this: postdocs and research associates deserve protections and benefits reflecting our enormous academic, financial, and reputational contributions to this world-class, multi-billion-dollar institution. With a union, we will win them.
Today, the National Labor Relations Board is holding a hearing to decide whether we can hold a union election. Both sides will present legal arguments and evidence, and we will continue to update postdocs and research associates as things proceed.
Instead, Penn admin has chosen to challenge our right to unionize, making it clear they don’t respect us as researchers. Penn is choosing to fight their own workers rather than work together with us to fight back against the Trump administration’s attacks on scientific research.
Yesterday, we received Penn’s official response to our petition for a union election. We had hoped Penn would respect the will of a supermajority of postdocs and research associates and agree to an election without delay.
"Of the 1,500 postdoctoral researchers at Penn, 1,000 signed authorization cards in support of forming Research Associates and Postdocs United, according to the group."

🚨We filed our petition with the NLRB for a union election! A supermajority of the 1,500 research associates and postdocs at Penn have signed over 1,000 cards in support of forming our union, RAPUP-UAW! 🚨
By a hateful presidential administration. We refuse to let the Trump administration scapegoat the LGBTQIA+ community. Join us, Penn AAUP, and our allies tomorrow 20-Mar @ 12 PM if you think Penn should do more to combat the hateful rhetoric of the Trump admin. Laws without morals are useless. (2/2).
175 million dollars in federal funding to Penn has been frozen. RAPUP-UAW stands in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, which is why we, and 6 other campus labor organizations, are encouraging Penn administration to refuse to comply with any dictatorial and autocratic directives issued (1/2)
