Given how 7 runs basically directly into 8, I was ALSO surprised at that. I wonder (given this comment) if that was another limitation imposed by the theaters. That they were "ok" doing 90 minutes, but less so doing 2 hours (at the given 2 week pre-release and other concessions already made).

They can pull from a massive library of movies that they have ticket share agreements with if they have empty theaters. That means a small, but guaranteed profit. Indie animation, even with this many followers, has no track record. Could leave them making NOTHING (obvs not, but execs are dumb).

You have to remember, the execs running these theater chains literally don't understand anything outside of their normal wheelhouse (working with the top 5-6 major studios) and they cant comprehend the potential profit in running indie stuff in their theaters.
