Snotty rejoinder about Southbound Jericho Parkway in the replies on the page aside, that track is pretty remarkable. Top list - all killer, no filler.

LETCHKOV - against germany 1994
LETCHKOV - against germany 1994 YouTube video by EveryFourthYear

I saw my Dad jump out of his chair once, ever, when he was watching sport. Yordan Letchkov putting Bulgaria into the lead against Germany in 1994. Very much a case of the above from memory.

I feel like my only role in this tournament is relevant sporting context provision.

I see you’ve gone for cricket rather than football. I like it.

Strong variation on Graham Gooch’s quote v Richard Hadlee, except he said Ilford 2nds which perhaps speaks to your opinion, that it’s not even capable of getting into the 2s.

They could work on making a good tea. A method for promotion

Prince - The Undertaker (Full Album) 1994 YouTube video by BrothaCharles

My favourite deepest of deep cuts is The Undertaker (think I am right in saying this whole thing was cut live with a bassist and a drummer, one take and then given away with a magazine). Undertaker starts about 20 or so mins in - there’s a track listing in the comments.

Looks like an Iron Maiden t-shirt designed by a cretin with access to the shittiest AI image prompt engine available.

The other way of course is go back to the 60s! There was nothing wrong with CCR or Stevie Wonder or whomever putting out an album very 6 months if they had the tracks to do it. Just do that.

Agreed; this infects new music too tho’. Expanded albums released several months after they 1st came out doesn’t make me think “I’ll buy your album” - still more lucrative than streaming? - when on 1st release. Either vault stuff or put it all out first time. They’re just milking people otherwise.

Man, I am not touching that Pitchfork/Pavement/Beatles post with your barge pole, never mind mine, no matter how many times it crosses my feed.

I blame myself. Should have voted for some of this stuff. Mind you, how much difference I’d have made is probably negligible. I don’t think any of Blond was on the bubble was it?

Their business model feels like The Way - though I am assuming the cover price reflects people being paid properly. An assumption too far? I don’t know.

@simonprice.bsky.social publicised that Disco Pogo were doing a Prince issue. It cost me £20 but it was well worth it for a proper, old school, well curated, music magazine. Was my first issue, I’ll probably buy more a it helps they’re not super frequent by the looks of things.

That Frank fact is…

Actually, I’ll let people fill in the blank themselves there.

Glad that in my day, we were able to discover music organically and without any sort of hidden marketing plan, like the Storkes and Andrew WK.

The rare occasion when the NFL guys I follow on BlueSky are talking about the same thing some of my PPP people I follow on BlueSky are talking about.

IMO the most egregious recent miss was Kapp in 2022. Re: impact on English summer, scored a test century, led the attack that successfully defended the women’s 100. Given how the game is structured, difficult to see how she could have done more.

Obviously plenty of other candidates in other years.

I am exactly the wrong person for this type of tournament because I absolutely would have selected 4 England midfielders across three songs:

Hoddle/Waddle - Diamond Lights
Paul Gascoigne - Fog On The Tyne
englandneworder - World In Motion (I.e. ft. John Barnes)

Decent midfield actually.

Another PWC goes by and Hoddle and Waddle’s Diamond Lights again fails to be selected to “enliven” England’s midfield.

Tragically, Hip sounds like an injury that might be appended to the playing status of a star player.

Reminds me of the story of Stuart Pearce showing his wife the team sheet for his first game managing a football team and her replying “where’s your goalkeeper?”

I am sure people loathe at least one (and possibly all) of the things I picked and HM’d but one of these I find the most frustration-inducing of earworms imaginable. I won’t say which, maybe it gets back in anyway on a discretionary pick or similar.

U2 are a Stones band verging on a Who band.

Joy Division/New Order are a Beatles band for a good long while.

That Manchester band should have been an AC/DC band who behaved a little like a Stones band.

Metallica are a Stones band.

I’m sure this is of interest to no one. And probably bollocks.

Theory: there are four types of white boy rock bands.

The Beatles - can evolve their sound somewhat successfully
The Stones - think they should evolve their sound but are best off in their main lane
The Who - don’t evolve your sound, you’ll disappear up your own arse
AC/DC - there’s only one sound

I found their records after LICD pretty dull to be honest.

Ladies and Gentlemen is literally their peak sad whineyness though. It’s literally an album about losing your partner to Richard Ashcroft though so 🤷‍♂️

2 weeks ago 3 0 2 0

Indeed. They really are AC/DC in that sense to since most of their best songs are just variants on “women are great, sex with women is great, let’s rock”

2 weeks ago 1 0 0 0

Indeed - as he once said, in a previous group, taking drugs to make music to take drugs to.

Doesn’t seem to like uppers though, I will say that.

2 weeks ago 2 0 0 0

Yet again, I invoke AC/DC - no band needs to evolve, and if you don’t like what they do, steer clear. Spiritualized are very much an AC/DC imo.
