Here's one I've shared before from early in the book that explains the FMC's career to the reader proxy.

THE DEVOURING is a cosmic horror thriller about a husband and wife who uncover an occult conspiracy at the heart of their city. Get your copy: amshilling.com/books

Drug trials are hugely important. Over 30 yrs ago my dad participated in an anti-rejection drug trial after his transplant. Today, a coworker takes that same drug. It has a name now, not just a number.

I participated in the Lyme vaccine trial recently for the same reason. Drug trials save lives.

if you are a writer and are considering using a title that follows the format '[a/an/x] [word] of [word] and [word]' I am pleading with you to reconsider

it tells the reader almost nothing, it doesn't sell any vibe, and it was already overused ten years ago

please please please pick something else

THE LORD OF THE WOOD is about a 43yo autistic guy who luckily doesn't have the internet or a traditional day job in which he might miss something bc he locked in too hard on something else

sadly, his life is kind of unhappy anyway

Just sobbed hardest I have since my mom died in 2020.

She missed these trials by a few months.

One of most ruthless cancers. Hard to fathom that maybe she'd still be here.

I feel such a hole inside.

In case you're wondering if we should fund mRNA research instead of another stupid war ... yes.

On top of reasons of role deconstruction and bodily autonomy, this is one reason why it's so important to many people in power to eradicate trans folk.

If you're secure with yourself, feeling good BEING yourself, they can't tell you you're broken and then sell you a "fix"

This week felt like August not April, but it’s nice to fall asleep to the evening thunderstorms. Outside there's forsythia and daffodils, magnolia and willows. And, after two (or maybe more like four) creatively fallow months, I’m writing again.

I don't want to hear a single goddamn person making excuses for D2D. If this was their solution for dealing with slop, why are they singling out just small authors? If it's such a great idea, why not make everyone pay it? "Well, because then *I'd* have to pay it. I'm okay with just YOU paying it."

if an emergency room doctor finds out you're trans it's about a 50/50 shot they're going to blame your hormones for the problem without investigating the issue further.

Yep. This is the 3rd time they've targeted small authors' income in a matter of months.

First they upped the minimum income before payout.
Then they cut the amount they pay out per sale under the guise of 'consolidating' percentages.
Now this.

1 = accident, 2 = coincidence, 3 = deliberate action

And I think #3 is the goal of the maintenance fee. I think @draft2digital.bsky.social doesn't give a shit about its small authors. It wants to keep the big earners because they're mcuh more cost efficient in terms of overhead, and it's happy to run out everyone else

Encourage everyone, especially if you make over $100 and would not be paying fees, to write them and let them know what you think

Kobo and OverDrive are companies with a combined passion for readers and reading. Working together, we have developed a way to make it easy for KWL authors to opt their titles directly into OverDrive’s library marketplace with terms that are comparable to working directly with OverDrive rather than through a third-party company. This means that you get paid 50% of the library price you set, and you don't have to pay an aggregator fee.

So, alternatives to draft2digital/d2d (I don't need them but some may): Kobo distributes to libraries via Overdrive. kobowritinglife.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/art...

Understanding D2D's Activation and Maintenance Fees - Draft2Digital | Blog A brief explanation of D2D's activation and maintenance fees, which accounts are subject to them, and what this means for you.

Ah man, DraftToDigital/ D2D are going to start charging us $12 USD a year for not earning 100 USD+ a year, on May 14th.

I'm tempted to go back to direct with Kobo (who do Overdrive), use Bookvault as my distributor & focus on Itchio and direct sales at this point. What are your thoughts authors?

I would be less angry about this if they were charging the "maintenance fee" to everyone, not just authors barely scraping by. I would be less furious if they didn't say that HAVE to charge legitimate, struggling authors because they can't /won't put effort into dealing with genAI slop.

Punishing authors who only put out a book a year / book every other year rather than flagging accounts putting up a book an hour.

"sorry, genAI spammers are forcing us to drive out smaller but legit authors" to me sounds like they are actually fine w genAI spammers since they make money via volume.

and they say we're gonna have to pay what's owed
We're gonna have to reap from some seed that's been sowed
And the birds up on the wires and the telegraph poles
They can always fly away from this rain and this cold
You can hear them singing out their telegraph code
All the way down the Telegraph Rd

So Draft 2 Digital have, seemingly on a whim, decided to become completely unviable for the vast majority of indie authors—including myself—by following up the increase in their payout thresholds with an annual $12 maintenance fee for accounts who earn less than $100 per year.

I'm real pissed.

Indie authors, @draft2digital.bsky.social is now imposing fees for low sellers. So if that is you, look at the financials and consider if it makes sense to keep your account.
