Welcome to Washington DC, Chancellor Merz!

Germany will keep supporting Ukraine’s defense. Our latest contribution funds a package of US military equipment under the new NATO PURL mechanism, with up to $500 million.

Chancellor Merz facilitated virtual talks today with @POTUS Trump, @VP Vance, @ZelenskyUA and European leaders on #Ukraine. They’re a strong sign of our close and trusting cooperation with the US. And: There is great unity between the US and Europe on Friday’s talks in Alaska.

I am thrilled to return to DC – this time as Germany’s Ambassador-designate to the US. Our nations share deep friendship, common values, and global responsibility. I look forward to strengthening this partnership, connecting with people across America, and engaging with you!

This is a big deal. A German Bundeswehr brigade stationed in Lithuania to help deter Russia and strengthen #NATO’s eastern flank. With 4,800 soldiers and 200 civilian staff, this will be the Bundeswehr’s largest permanent deployment abroad.

I am deeply shocked and outraged by the murder of two Israeli Embassy staff in #Washington. I condemn this antisemitic act of terror. We stand with our colleagues at the Israeli Embassy, and our thoughts are with the families of the victims.

I welcomed State Premier Mario Voigt and his delegation from Thuringia, one of Germany’s eastern states. The US is Thuringia’s top trading partner. Some of the state’s cutting-edge exports are hard to replace. But trade & investment flow both ways. Let’s keep strengthening this win-win partnership.

Germany is on track to form a new government: our two main democratic parties have reached a coalition agreement. A sign of democratic continuity and the strength of our political institutions.

Research ties between Germany and the US are strong, and both sides benefit. The Max Planck Society recently funded +650 visiting scholars and +930 research projects. It runs four Centers and an Institute in the US. Tonight, I welcomed @max-planck.de President Cramer, here to deepen 🇺🇸-🇩🇪 cooperation.

Germany’s machinery and equipment industry plays a key role in supporting the US economy. Amid new US tariffs on the EU, I had a valuable exchange with VDMA President Bertram Kawlath on how to further strengthen our transatlantic industrial ties.

I’m in New York celebrating 100 years of the German Academic Exchange Service with @daadusa.bsky.social. DAAD has supported 3,000,000+ scholars, including 80,000 transatlantic exchanges. Sharing scientific expertise and experience fuels innovation in our countries and is a pillar of our strength.

Tonight we kick it off in New York with the pre-opening of the Frick Collection. What a wonderful building. What wonderful art. Even more beautiful after renovation.

Germany and California are ideal partners. Aim to further deepen our relationship. Discussed with Gov Newsom @governor.ca.gov how to achieve a new quality in our relations. Will look at initiatives to realize our potential in key sectors such as tech, science and energy. Thank you for having me.

The National Ignition Facility in Livermore is record breaking in fusion research, the energy source of the future. Very impressive and energetic tour by Dr. Ma, who heads the Laboratory’s Inertial Fusion Energy Institutional Initiative. She‘s a true example for the importance of women in science!

It's good to be in Santa Clara at NVIDIA, the largest chip developer in the world. This is where the foundation of AI is being built. People all over the world benefit from these innovations made in the USA. Let's explore possibilities to walk this path into the future together.
