Had an audio drama audition tonight. I had to do a central American accent. A wee while ago I had a part I had to do a Southern Georgia accent; a part I won over American actors believe it or not. But tonight, I was finding it hard to shake off the Georgia accent, it was nuts. Got there in the end 😆

The part was for an AI with attitude, so I remembered 𝑩𝒂𝒃𝒚𝒍𝒐𝒏 5 & the AI character called Sparky that Harlan Ellison played. Sparky keeps giving Garibaldi shit. It's hilarious. So I tried to channel that for the audition. I had a hoot. I Have No Mouth But I Still Give Shit! 😆 🤖

F.H's story is a cautionary tale of not trusting charismatic leaders. Paul was a tyrant & all but destroyed the Fremen with their/his Jihad, but J.T could only have read as far as the 2nd book, if he even did. But he would probably have flinched at this story arc.

He never talked about it which was decent of him to not openly trash a fellow author. Not liking something is fine, but why is the great mystery. There's many angles he may have disliked. He was very religious so FH's use of religion as a tool to corrupt & socially engineer may have horrified him.

While on the subject of 𝑫𝒖𝒏𝒆 movies, David Lynch's is my favourite Adaptation. The 𝑫𝒖𝒏𝒆 saga is a weird story that deserved a weird movie & Frank Herbert loved it. & nothing has been more spectacular than Patrick Stewart charging into battle with a Pug.

We'll never know why Tolkien disliked 𝑫𝒖𝒏𝒆, but he was a gentleman about it & never publicly spoke of it. Their styles are very different. Tolkien created whole languages with elaborate world building & he hated allegory. Herbert focused on character complexity & used allegory. It's a deep subject.

With the 3rd Dune movie coming, I'm again pondering on why Tolkien disliked Dune "with some intensity." Tolkien wrote about empathetic heroes & ordinary moral folk shaping history. Herbert did not write empathetic heroes; his characters were complex & power hungry. Both wrote masterfully.

Today marks a day in history when Scotland changed forever. The Battle of Culloden 16th April 1746. The aftermath of that day saw Scottish culture decimated. Scottish history was banned from being taught in schools & our native languages were only just late last year, once again recognized.
