It is hard to capture what a sweeping strategic defeat the war in Iran has been for the United States. I’m going to thread here some of the posts today that try to capture those effects. Here’s the first:

Do Trump's threat of withdrawal from NATO affect Europeans' willingness to spend money on defence and their attitudes towards the alliance? In my and Hannah Barretts research note in IO we present a pre-registered experiment in three European NATO countries, performed before the US 2024 election.
Mye som skjer i verden om dagen. Vil du høre mine (i all beskjedenhet) rykende ferske takes en gang i uka?
Over bordet.
Was it a wooden horse?
Fascinating stuff!
a lot of discussion about how "cosmopolitan" urban dwellers are, but a really underdiscussed trend is the homogenization of culture across *rural* areas of the USA - replacement of once-distinct regional cultures with generic "redneck" accent and culture, regional religions with evanglicalism etc
moving to the notoriously geopolitics free region of (checks notes) the middle east.
I have had an interesting time asking Claude Code to write papers and review papers since I suspect that this tool - and other agentic AIs - will be a major challenge (and opportunity) for political science, and wanted to get a better understanding of this.
Three thoughts:
The son of a South Asian immigrant from Uganda serving as the secret police chief of the United States calling for Americans to prioritize a settler colonial state in the Middle East populated by settlers from across Europe and MENA and they say the right-wing is anti-globalization

I've seen some similar projects, but IMO this seems to better capture some of the fine-grained detail
The geopolitical centre of gravity is shifting towards China, driven primarily by Europe's increased distance from the US under the Trump II era.
We analysed decades of UN voting data to create a new US-China axis, and found the US advantage is at its lowest level this century.
Yesterday marked 10 years since C‑REX was founded. This thread highlight what the center has done — research, PhDs, datasets, events, policy engagement and international partnerships. THREAD 🧵 www.sv.uio.no/c-rex/english/

"Rather than waiting for the hegemon to restore an order it’s busy dismantling, create your own institutions and agreements that function as intended. Countries earn the right to principled stands by reducing their vulnerability to retaliation.” Important piece by @seva.bsky.social.
Looks like the EU-US trade deal is now dead, with all three major groups in the EU Parliament calling at least for suspension. The downward spiral has already begun.
Macron now refers to "intimidation or threat", explicitly comparing US behaviour in Greenland to Russia's approach to Ukraine. Sweden's PM says: "We will not allow ourselves to be blackmailed". Much, tougher language from Europeans than we have seen before, responding to the US escalation.
I'm guessing now might be a good time to get some non-US cloud storage and email solutions. Any recommendations?
