This is fair. I get how academics are in-effect sole trader small businesses, but the number of applications going in where the instructions clearly state that the applicant is not eligible.

Yet, I write my letter of support, and off they go...

My two steps for greater academic success:

Train the best early post-docs how to build good grant applications.

Teach all faculty to read and understand grant guidance that means they are absolutely not going to get funded if they apply.

Naturally this guidance has been ignored.

I agree. US universities naturally include ongoing improvement, and regional economic development, in their core activities (ASU a prime example!)

If only leaders and staff at UK universities were more open minded. The work has been done, so risk is reduced.

Just posted a comment on your site. US institutions face more regulatory restrictions than UK universities. Surprisingly, these restrictions have been turned to strengths (by ASU and UCSD, for example). The barriers around 'being more innovative' are largely based on attitude. Here the UK fails.
