What We Learned from Minnesota
3 big lessons: play offense, build trust, prepare now
There's a lot to learn from Minnesota, and we need to start thinking about and applying those lessons now so we can be prepared for when the next call comes.

For national groups & networks (like us at @powerswitchaction.org), there are 3 key things I've been reflecting on:
✅ Going on offense allowed MN to make this a national fight
✅ Degrees of trust shaped the roles we were able to step into
✅ We had to prepare for things we’ve never imagined before

There are many important lessons from Minnesota, from on-the-ground organizing tactics to messaging and narrative strategies.
It's also important to note that they were led by a diverse group of folks, from traditional institutions like nonprofits and unions to decentralized volunteer structures.

The Trump regime isn't slowing down with its authoritarian violence and power grabs.
I wrote a few thoughts about how Minnesotans went head-to-head with the regime while also engaging the whole country to act in solidarity with them.

ICE are alllll over Harlem right now, 116 & Frederick Douglass, checking IDs and targeting the area’s African community. Multiple people have been detained.
Community members are advising folks to carry citizenship documents - or stay away if they are at risk

‘Enough Is Enough’: Hundreds of Minnesota Businesses Take Stand Against ICE
Mom-and-pop businesses in MN are showing more backbone against tyranny than all of the Big Tech oligarchs combined 💪 www.nytimes.com/2026/01/23/u...

My take on the Jan 23 action in Minneapolis is that I don’t really care whether it’s a “true” general strike (we could argue about that all day).
What DOES matter is that it’s a bold and necessary escalation, and local labor leaders are publicly encouraging workers to join in anti-ICE resistance

Forty years ago, 90% of media outlets were spread across 50 companies.
Now, just 5 companies control 90% of the media market.
This consolidation hurts consumers and helps oligarchs. 🧵

Tucson residents fought back against Amazon’s secretive plans to build a data center in the desert — and won.
But now, in a blatant attempt to override the City Council and the will of the people, Amazon and the project’s developer is pushing ahead anyway.

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

I used to focus on left versus right. Now I’m much more worried about the money at the top. But while it might seem strange to say it, I think this is a hopeful way of looking at the world that opens the door to coalitions that seemed impossible before. My first for the @newrepublic.com:

I want to be clear: this is what American prisons are like.
I spent years posting about the humanitarian crisis in U.S. prisons. The criminal legal system consigns Americans who are incarcerated to live like this FOR YEARS. DECADES.

LOL Nothing Matters 🫠
Inflation is back. The government is nationalizing one private company and blackmailing another. But no one cares because . . .
"Democrats are freaked out because their nominee for mayor in New York City wants to run a pilot program with five municipal-owned grocery stores. Meanwhile, last week the U.S. government became the largest shareholder in the mining company MP Materials."

If you think a group of workere should strike (or not strike) it’s very simple.
1. Get a job doing that work
2. Organize your workplace
3. Convince your coworkers to do that thing
4. Do it your self (together)
Until you do all that, don’t tell other workers they should strike
