Great! Let me know the results!
Like I said, I'm happy to keep track of who is doing this survey so we can start to compare cities worldwide.

Go for it! I'm so interested in the experiences of women who bike worldwide!
Let me know if you go forward with Canberra.
And I'm happy to act as a temporary clearinghouse for towns that are collecting this data on women's experience of violence while biking.
Here's a copy of the PDX survey. Feel free to adapt and share with your town. I'm very curious about what you'll find!

I just re-read this article I wrote 2 years ago. It's really good and I hope you read it too!
Fun fact: I worked hard to distribute this survey on violence to women who bike in Utrecht & most respondents were baffled by the questions. Most couldn't understand how biking could be unsafe for anyone.
One of the main reasons I ❤️ Utrecht is that I feel safe biking anywhere in the city AND the government works hard every year to make getting around by bike even better.
It's a sharp contrast to biking in America (and, frankly, most places in the world). It's time to change the world.
I ❤️ my volunteer work in Utrecht refurbishing used kids bikes. So many bikes!
Ik hou van mijn Utrechtse vrijwilligerswerk. Zoveel fietsen!

Just an ordinary Saturday afternoon, waiting in line at the Utrecht Transfer Station.

Many good city-building ideas fail, not because they’re wrong, but because they lack good stories.
Stories aren't just words. Success comes from repetition & reach—and willingness to meet people where they are, not where you wish they were.

Every country in the world needs to provide low-carbon, affordable options for people's everyday travel and the transport of small goods.
Dutch doorfietsroutes are a model to jump-start that process.
Like many thriving cities, Utrecht has wide streets with fast-moving, multi-lane car & truck traffic.
The key difference is, Utrecht leaders have built safe ways for people walking & biking to cross these streets, and pleasant, separated lanes to travel without a car.
Worth trying in your city?

Imperfection > Evil
People power > Oligarchy

Thrilling news from Hungary for "degenerate multicultural liberals*" everywhere! 🇭🇺

One of the great pleasures of living in the Netherlands (and Utrecht in particular) is watching the positive transformation of the city's infrastructure over the past few years.
Better bike paths and parking, new public spaces, more street trees, and a huge boom in new housing construction.
Me too! It's so nice to see people relaxed and enjoying each other's company as they slowly bike through the city center. It's what every city should aspire to!

Cities are the foundation of human civilization
The foundation of cities is people.
City building starts with holding on to places where people can gather & thrive. Enough places to live, trees, places where children can play and we all can grow old with dignity.
Find some good city builders here.
That's so sad to hear. I thought Berlin had green, progressive city leaders.
I relocated to the Netherlands, and Utrecht specifically, because of excellent bike infrastructure. I don't want to get old in a place where cars define the city.
People feel better around other people, not cars.
Last year #Utrecht widened ~mile of bike lanes on either side of a major retail, freight, transit street so that people on bikes could safely pass ➕ ride side-by-side.
Also added tons of bike parking, parklets, trees, safer street crossings. Lost ~60 car parking spaces.
Good choice for any city?

Here's Amsterdamesestraatweg last spring during street rebuild.
Construction in some areas was down to the drainage system under the street & had complex public space & infrastructure requirements. Yet it was a very quick build with a very high quality of finished product.
I ❤️ Dutch construction!
But his right ear, where he was hit by a bullet, looks great!

Only inept women have been fired. Not the manly men.

I volunteer with an Utrecht non-profit De Fietsmeesters to help teach adults how to bike. Students are almost always women, and mostly new immigrants. There are 16 in this class, and 4 of us volunteers.
By the end of 10 weeks everyone is usually successfully biking on the road — it's so empowering!
