Felix was a rising star in the Berlin art scene before the Nazi party rose to power.

However, when WWII broke out, the French government began using it to imprison “undesirable aliens” which included German-Jewish refugees like Felix, who were ironically seen as potential enemy spies because of their German nationality.

Most Jewish prisoners held there were eventually handed over to the Nazis and deported to Auschwitz.

In August 1940, after several months of misery at Saint-Cyprien, Felix requested to be “repatriated” to Germany. This was a high-risk gamble; many refugees were being sent back to the Reich, where they faced immediate arrest. While he was being transported by train back toward Germany, he managed to flee the transport during a stop or a moment of low surveillance. He successfully made his way back to Brussels, where his wife, Felka Platek, was still living.

From 1940 until 1944, the couple lived in a state of constant terror. They stayed in a small attic apartment provided by friends. Because they had no legal papers and couldn’t leave, Nussbaum spent nearly every waking hour painting. It was during this “hidden” period that he created his most famous works, documenting the dread of being hunted, until they were finally discovered on June 20, 1944, because of an informant.

They were held briefly at the Mechelen transit camp. On July 31, 1944, they were placed on the very last transport train to leave Belgium for Auschwitz, where they arrived on August 2, 1944, when they were soon murdered, less than one month before Auschwitz was liberated on September 3, 1944.

The work was painted while Nussbaum was interned at the Saint Cyprien internment camp (after he was arrested in Belgium) run by the French government in southern France.

The matter-of-fact way she asks what investors should do if Trump destroys Iran. Absolutely wild.

"Let's talk about tonight, this deadline that President Trump has set 8 p.m., has threatened to destroy a civilization. How does an investor process that? Is it a bigger upside risk or downside risk?"

This important point (👇) was censored (by BlueSky!) for "intolerance".

I'm putting it up again; wish me luck! To paraphrase Barry Goldwater, "Intolerance of the intolerant is no vice" ...

As proud as I am for NASA (and CSA + ESA) and, of course, the astronauts – the absolute moral failure of the US government (Republican America) this week – with almost ZERO pushback against Trump who's a terrorist by any and all definitions (a nuclear terrorist at that) rips my brain & heart in two.

Point of no return: a hellish ‘hothouse Earth’ getting closer, scientists say Continued global heating could set irreversible course by triggering climate tipping points, but most people unaware

“This would lock the world into a new and hellish ‘hothouse Earth’ climate far worse than the 2-3C temperature rise the world is on track to reach. The climate would also be very different to the benign conditions of the past 11,000 years, during which the whole of human civilisation developed.”

If he will use nuclear weapons, this will be the end, not only of Iran. Then Putin will use them against Ukraine, and China against Taiwan. Total insanity. How can the US elite really want this?

Michel Pierre Yakovleff is a French general (général de corps d’armée) who served in the French Army and at high levels in NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).

A plan to build a runway inside Iran during active bombing to extract uranium is basically fantasy logistics.👇

The U.S. National Science Foundation's Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request reflects a strategic alignment of resources in a constrained fiscal environment while eliminating woke and weaponized grant programs that previously funded radical DEI projects. NSF is prioritizing investments that have the greatest potential to address the most critical, high-priority challenges and opportunities identified by the Administration, Congress, and the science and technology community.

I should be used to it by now, but it's still a gut punch to go to the website of the funding agency that helped launch your career and read that they're "eliminating woke and weaponized grant programs that previously funded radical DEI projects" Fuck that 🤬

The Next Coup Attempt And How to Stop It

We are seven months away from the most consequential midterm election in US history. Meanwhile, we are fighting a war. These are the structural conditions for a coup attempt in which a president tries to nullify elections and take permanent power as a dictator.
