Lenny, the project zomboid dev's reddit post says,
That shouldn't be taken as a definitive statement whether AI was used at all, as none of us can possibly say for certain at this point until we look into it more. The important distinction is they were contracted and paid for commissioned art pieces from a professional artist, so WE certainly didn't use AI in replacement of a paid artist. This art as well as the new loading screens were all done by the same artist who did our Bob on Car art way back in 2011 way before AI was a thing. He's a professional AAA concept artist whose always preferred to stay anonymous due to avoiding complication with his day job.
As to whether there's AI used in any part of these images productions I could not say, I would hope not, but I will say however that in terms of the ethics of AI replacing artists in the industry, I feel confident that either way we have contracted an artist and paid them for the production of this art, it looks awesome, and even if AI was involved in the process in any way there'll have been plenty of and a majority of talented artist skill involved too.
Beyond that, particularly in terms of any other concerns about AI art, we'll look into it.

The Indie Stone. Not disclosed, found to have gen-ai arrt splash screen with build 42 as well as newspaper assets. Splash images were removed. Lenny's stance is not against ai and is trying to cover it up -y
