A knight with blue skin in green armour in front of an orange background. An arrow is lodged in their helmet, piercing through the other side, some blood is trickling down. The helmet face is in a cross shape to accommodate the knights third eye placed vertically in the centre of their forehead.

Every year, I reread the LotR trilogy. This last year's reread amped me up and I started keying Middle-earth 12 miles at a time

Concurrently, without meaning to, I wrote a game to run the hexcrawl

I call it Lore - a Lord of the Rings Adventure Game retroclone

Here's what I think is fun about it🧵

Gracias!

I do kind of like a slow pace for some games. It emulates the less accelerated times of the 80s and 90s.
But I do agree it's a slog. We've reached level 5 in UVG and onwards it's like 1 level every 10 sessions, it's crazy. Luckily they have pets to give them XP.

I'm also excited but sadly bringing the precons to Argentina ain't simple. Amazon used to carry them but there's no supply as of late.

I played Final Fantasy Tactics and it was a game of all time. Delita Heiral lives rent free in my head now, so I decided to unpack the ways in which this game has influenced my ttrpg design.

How Jennell Jaquays Evolved Dungeon Design, Part 1: Pre-Jaquays Dungeons (This is a slightly cleaned up version of my two Bluesky threads on Jennell Jaquays, preserved in a hopefully easier to read format. Thank Amanda P for reminding me that having these things stored …

This is the 2nd post, the first of which establishes the state of design before her monumental impact, thus demonstrating the enormity of her contribution. She made what our games are today in so many ways. She is missed.

From the boardgames community on Reddit: Richard Garfield on Player Interaction, Randomness and Multiplayer Combat Explore this post and more from the boardgames community

Can't pinpoint the exact quote, but I believe he's stated the former in this interview:

There's a statement from Richard Garfield about randomness that's interesting because it subverts its opposition against skill/competition. He says that a healthy random factor will make a game more welcoming for newcomers and not alienate those inclined to value competition and skill.

Finally (sorry for the long response!), regarding the complexity of the game, I've found it rather simple to prepare for a Pendragon session. I GM 3rd edition, so not valid for every other ed, but I need mostly a hook, some enemies and npcs, a mystery, and that's it.
Good review!

I'd say it allows quite a lot of protagonism, too. That might take many sessions and quite a bit of luck, but it is doable, specially with passions involved. I wouldn't look at published adventures, but that's just me, I don't like them in general.

And even by literary sources, where knights will often chase whatever adventure hook or mystery they stumble upon. Or obey their lord's call to a particular quest or battle. It's a form of gaming with modern exponents like Mouse Guard, even, and there are ways to still foster player choice there.
