Foreign languages are more useful than some of the popular “practical” degrees. Business administration and accounting majors are a dime a dozen. An American who speaks two or three languages fluently stands above the crowd and can work in many different fields.
It starts with “gender studies and underwater basket weaving are a waste of time” and turns into “studying math or Chinese is a luxury you can’t afford.”
I'd love to read something like that! But what I'd really be interested in is a historiography on ancient Greek sources — treating what was objectively a frontier backwater as the center of the civilized world.
