These findings underscore the value of sustained mental-health support for both parents during their child’s early years to help reduce later risk for their children.

Higher psychological distress in either parent during their child’s early years, and a steady increase in maternal distress, were associated with more pronounced adolescent depressive symptoms.
3/4
Distress levels in mothers and fathers developed in parallel across their child’s early years, indicating tightly aligned parental mental-health patterns.
2/4
Using data from 8,888 families in the UK Millennium Cohort Study, trajectories of parental psychological distress trajectories when their child was 3 to 11 years of age were modeled and then linked to offspring depressive symptoms at age 14. https://twp.ai/4ir6hR

Conversely, 86.5% of the participants possessed all the necessary conditions for developing a major depressive disorder with 13.2% of these participants experiencing 1 or more MDEs over the 2-year follow-up.
Only 13.5% of participants did not report all of these “necessary” factors and were nearly immune to developing one or more major depressive episodes (MDEs) over the follow-up.
Authors analyzed data from 382 adolescents over two years and found rumination, stressful events, depressive symptoms, and self-criticism to be necessary for depression to occur.
This longitudinal study explored which factors are necessary (but not sufficient) for adolescents to develop depression. https://twp.ai/4irCBh
Separate analyses for males and females found that higher ADHD symptoms in females at ages 7, 11, and 14 predicted higher body mass index (BMI) at ages 11, 14, and 17, whereas this association was only seen in males between ages 11 and 14. #MillenniumCohortStudy #ADHD
The authors found that children with ADHD were typically lighter at birth than a control group, but were also 1.5 – 2.5 times more likely to have obesity from ages 5 to 17.
