What are the worst ethical disasters in NLP history?

(I'm teaching "ethics of NLP" tomorrow and history is good for teaching this topic.)

Most are data breaches/releases (AOL search logs, OKCupid profiles, Finnish therapy records...) but what others?

I'll put some other examples in thread --> 1/n

China has rapidly overtaken the U.S. in total scientific output - including top journals. Other middle- and low-income countries - India, Russia and Brazil - have also increased their research output, collectively matching the total production of high-income EU countries.

The coming global food crisis Hunger and even famine are foreseeable consequences of the war on Iran. Now the world must act to shield the poorest from effects that will continue long after the fighting stops

Truly one of the decisions of all time.

If the reviewers were overloaded, why not just make the applications more lightweight?

Now people spend months writing a B2 that no one reads, and may never get a shot at improving it. After 2 years an application idea is probably redundant, anyways.

The point is not to criticise and I think these initiatives to ensure transparency in the use of LLMs for research are important... but this should also prompt us, as researchers, to reflect on our practices when the carbon footprint of writing a paper is comparable to flying from Paris to Berlin...

Very useful comparative oil shock data viz.

Every major oil shock, put on the same timeline. The 1973 embargo was the longest lasting. The 1990 Gulf War was the biggest reversal. The 2026 Hormuz crisis is the steepest climb and drop. But the line isn't finished yet.
