John Heartfield War and Corpses – The Last Hope of the Rich 1932 Photomontage With his photomontages for the magazine AIZ (Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung), John Heartfield reacted to the reporting of nationalist newspapers that sought to stoke hatred toward the victorious powers of World War I. Heartfield viewed members of the economic elite as warmongers and portrayed them as the profiteers of a coming war: depicted as a teeth-baring hyena wearing a top hat and military decorations. John Heartfield (born Helmut Herzfeld; 1891–1968) was a pioneering German visual artist who transformed photomontage into a potent political weapon against the rise of fascism. A key figure in the Berlin Dada movement, he famously anglicized his name in 1916 as a defiant protest against the anti-British fervor of World War I. Heartfield is best known for his scathing, satirical covers for the leftist magazine Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung (AIZ), where he used meticulously cut-and-pasted imagery to subvert Nazi propaganda and ridicule Adolf Hitler. Forced to flee Germany in 1933 just steps ahead of the SS, he continued his work from exile in Prague and later London, eventually returning to East Germany in 1950. His innovative use of typography, 3D book jackets, and stage designs for collaborators like Bertolt Brecht solidified his legacy as one of the 20th century’s most courageous and influential graphic designers.
