Told my wife to have dinner ready at 6 or I'll obliterate her entire civilization. So anyway, she now charges me a fee to use the bathroom that used to be free, and I didn't get any dinner, but I'm pretty sure I won that exchange.
I lol'd at this.😆

I use a skating analogy. Too many researchers do figure skating—performing to win style points from their peers—rather than skating to reach a destination across the ice.
I see possibly valid concerns about the QUALITY of research, but we should not focus on how AI disrupts our scoring system.
Proud of my Cato Institute colleague David Bier who stood his ground at a hearing today and talked back to bloviating Sen. John Kennedy (R-Louisiana). David responds to the clip and furnishes receipts. @cato.org
The Trump Administration has continued to weaponize the federal government and abuse its power to threaten and intimidate anyone who doesn’t bend the knee to them.
I’m running because Maine deserves a Senator who will stand up to him — and it’s clear that’s not Susan Collins.
In memory of Neil Sedaka.
And in memory of better times in America.

Congratulations Michael!
It looks like a great list of "founding faculty", but you well deserve to be among them.
Not that any one place can hold you, but is this your new "fulltime" gig?
To my friends on the left:
Listen to Republicans, former Republicans, and conservatives talk about MAGA's threat to America in far more detailed and scarier terms than you often hear even on Bluesky.
From the Principles First National Summit:
This group of moderates, conservatives, Republicans, and ex-Republican did nothing but cheer the people of Minneapolis.
They are viewed as a ray of hope—Americans standing against tyranny when so many others find it inconvenient.
@michaelsteele.bsky.social: "Trump wants to stoke violence and he wants to use the levers of government to do it…If we don't feed the beast it starves. And that is what happened in Minnesota. We didn't feed the beast of violence with a violent response, and it starved.
NYT gift article on the #PrinciplesFirst Summit I am attending.
Good article, but I strongly disagree with the headline—we are NOT fractured and we are growing.

TBF (still my default inclination) nearly every administration has uttered the mathematical absurdity of wanting a "strong" dollar while accusing others of making their currency weak.
🤔 MAYBE we never should have let "strength" become the standard metaphor for rising or falling exchange ratios?
Make each authorization specific to a particular time and place, be limited to a single day, to a limited list of agents, and require approval of the Secretary of DHS.
I believe secrecy was permitted during the Waco raid, for instance, though all names were later made public during investigations.

I am a consistent colorblind conservative. I don't give a damn about the ethnicity of either the Federal thugs or their victims.
Let MAGA talk like we are in a race war—we don't need to encourage that BS.

"🎵Blood and bones, and these whistles and phones against Miller's and Noem's dirty lies🎵"
George Will compared Minneapolis to Birmingham 1963. Both will be remember as ordinary Americans standing up for American liberty.
I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
Stay free
The attacks on Somalis, like the old "welfare queen" allegations, twisted some real facts and mainstream policy arguments into a fictional tale that leveraged ugly sentiments against a minority group in order to promote a more radical agenda.
Anyone remember what we once did to a President for covering up a burglary?
What should be done for 2 murders and multiple acts of violence?
Also, my father’s final words to me were to continue to fight the good fight. He would be honored in Alex’s sacrifice, and ashamed of this current administration.
In my dad’s words, I encourage you all to continue to “fight the good fight.”
A view from Germany:
"When they came for the children, I said nothing because they were not my children".
The entire world feels the awful parallels.
Too obvious a point even to make, perhaps. But there was no “unrest” in Minneapolis before ICE and CBP showed up. ICE and CBP are the cause of the chaos…and the killings.
Get them out of there.
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
It is heartbreaking that this sounds so much like a researcher moving to a lab in China.
While many will still move to America for the research opportunities, we fool ourselves if we think we won't lose many.
Both the loss of talent and funding cuts mean there will be less reason to move here.
For those keeping score, Bellingcat, The New York Times Visual Investigation Team, & Washington Post's Visual Forensic team have all published analysis showing the ICE shooter wasn't in the path of Renee Nicole Good’s vehicle when he shot her, contradicting statements by the President & his cronies
Not deporting Venezuelans with TPS would “lower the deficit by $70.9 billion & raise GDP by $504.4 billion” in 10 years; 50 million barrels of oil are worth $2.8 billion. Economist Mark Regets: “People are more valuable than oil.” @mclem.org @douglasrivlin.bsky.social www.forbes.com/sites/stuart...
The people we have received from Venezuela are far more valuable to the American economy than any oil we might seize.
