Shot from ground level, a round ceiling mural that echoed Metis embroidery. On a black background, we see a wild rose in tjr centre, surrounded by flowers, berries, birds and butterflies.
The mural in context - on the ceiling, surrounded by lights and blond wood ceiling tiles. It hangs above the soaring atrium of the University Commons
I was on the @ualberta.bsky.social campus today for the unveiling of this remarkable art installation by Metis painter Christi Belcourt. It’s called In My Grandmother’s Time, and it blends traditional motifs from Metis beading and embroidery with digital technology. And it’s gorgeous. #ualberta #yeg

Federal government puts timeline in place for Port of Churchill project: Kinew
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew says Ottawa has hinted that it wants liquified natural gas shipping out of Churchill by 2030 or federal support for an expansion of a port in the community could be off the ...
A pipeline to Churchill by 2030 is in the same category as Doug Ford's $100 billion tunnel under the 401: BONKERS!
And who's going to pony up $50 billion for the fleet of a dozen icebreakers that would needed? I don't want one thin dime of my tax dollars spent on that.

It is unfortunate that the Manitoba Wildlife Federation has decided to oppose it and spread lies so much, though that seems to now be their main mandate. Sounds like this will proceed regardless thankfully!

What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men, you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week — which is the way he wants it.

Most farmers and ranchers are great stewards of the land but there are exceptions. On our family farm strychnine was never used.

Two kids came to the door offering to shovel my driveway. It is supposed to be +20C on Tuesday but at this point any kids willing to do work, I'm like hell yeah $8 each and ginger ales for both of you. Hazzah.

The list of species that are hanging on to a small scrap of land on the prairies and could be extirpated because of this is pretty long - prairie dogs, burrowing owls, swift fox, western harvest mouse...many more.

someone explain to my simple brain that ANY consideration was made for the environment before strychnine was approved over this area.
The federal government gets an F.
The Saskatchewan government gets an F.
The Alberta government gets an F.
Fails across the board here.

One last map. National Parks inside and near the strychnine use area in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Grasslands NP fully inside the zone
Elk Island NP fully inside the zone
Prince Albert and Waterton NP directly adject-can use right up to the park boundary
Riding Mountain, Banff, Jasper very close.

Plus it is less than 30 km from Riding Mountain National Park.
In Alberta the strychnine zone butts right up against Waterton National Park, 35 km from Banff National Park, and 85 km from Jasper National Park, assuming it will only be used in the approved area, which it won't.

Indeed. The approval also goes right against the western and southern border of Prince Albert National Park. So the only two national parks in Saskatchewan are put directly in harm's way.

And here is the remaining range of the burrowing owl on the prairies in green completely within the approved area for strychnine use.
Burrowing owls inhabit similar prairie areas, using the same burrow holes, and feed on ground squirrels.

If it looks like the area approved for strychnine took zero consideration for the environment that's because its true.
The red area is where strychnine is approved for use for the next two years. The blue area is the last remaining range of swift foxes in Canada.

Meanwhile, despite Saskatchewan’s announcement of a new vaccine eligibility season for COVID opening April 1, only one clinic has been listed by SHA for the entire province - in Beauval.
We have been unable to find a pharmacy in Saskatoon #yxe with vaccine. Those contacted don’t expect to get any.

My favourite part of teaching is when you ask for feedback throughout the term and get none but recieve all manner of comments in the student feedback after the course is complete and it’s too late to address any of it.

Yeah if someone was asked to make a map of where to deploy poison to do the most damage to swift foxes, hawks, eagles, owls, red foxes, coyotes, pet dogs and more, this is about what the map looks like. It 100% ignores any and all environmental concerns.

At least some major cities are apparently excluded--Alberta explicitly excluded Calgary and Edmonton on their map but Saskatchewan did not.
I have seen the maps from each province but zero details to explain the specifics.

I made a map of areas where strychnine has been authorized for 'emergency use' on ground squirrels based on the individual Alberta and Saskatchewan gov maps. I put a 5 km buffer around it.
You can download the GoogleEarth file here:

You can see all of the areas at risk.
