‘People still remember it 40 years later’: the making of Chuckie Egg The iconic game that came to define 8-bit programming still conjures flutters of nostalgia 40 years on – all thanks to a 15-year-old tea boy who worked a Saturday shift in a computer shop in Greater M...

Hi I wrote about the making of classic platformerChuckie Egg and talked to its creator Nigel Alderton. Please give it a read as I want to show there’s an audience for this gaming history stuff 🙏

Sudoku Adventure Personal Tracking

I'm getting these puzzles from this spreadsheet btw, in case you want to play more.

They're mostly 6x6 sudoku variants, and each have both a link to Sudokupad (to play) and YouTube (to see a guy explain + solve it).

I love these puzzles!

Oh yeah, I can see how a lack of given digits can be daunting!

This is the power of variant sudoku haha

My office overlooks a Tesla dealership, so there's a massive parking lot filled with Teslas and because of the Dutch license plate system you can tell roughly what the date was a car was purchased, so I judge them harshly if they're bought too recently by giving them a dirty look.

True for non-adventure games too imho! The only reason why I'm killing all those robo-dinos in Horizon: Zero Dawn is because I want to know how the story unfolds.

Really struggling to understand how this is "news". As if we're not already 200 years into the industrial revolution. We've had trains, cars, airplanes for over a century at this point. We can fly to the freaking Moon. Who is impressed by a machine crossing a distance of 42 km / 26 miles??

Infrastructure isn't supposed to turn a profit.

The sewers aren't supposed to be profitable.

The parks aren't supposed to be profitable.

The postal service isn't supposed to be profitable.

The "profit" is in how it enables everyone in society to do more.

These highly specific records remind me of how Microsoft desperately tried to say the Zune was a success because it was "the best selling 100 GB music player" at a time when Apple only made an 80 and 120 GB iPod.

If you're in the Netherlands or Belgium and speak Dutch, you can watch the show for free through play.tv where it airs every Sunday evening at 8pm (local time).

Otherwise (!) you can join the TSLOG Discord at discord.gg/tslog where they have English-subtitled episodes available (!!!)

Not only is this a great podcast, but Flemish reality TV game show "De Mol" is a very, very good and fun watch.

There's a new season on right now! It's only 9 episodes for a season, which includes one recap episode at the end where is explained how it all unfolded.

As a pre-teen author undergoing the incorrect puberty, my own
ZZT games circled the same themes again and again, at first with a
layer of distancing irony that slowly eroded like the mountain
being pecked away by that bird in Hell: they were fetish games.
They revolved around captured princesses, with bare feet and torn
dresses, chained in ASCII dungeons, punished and degraded,
threatened with torture and hardship and peril. These were, in
essence, all manifestations of the submissive woman, the painslut
and pillow princess I would eventually become, but could not yet admit to wanting to be, could not yet admit that such a thing could be wanted.

everyone is currently obsessed with *checks notes* a 1997 game called Moon Child. but did you know other weird games came out in the 90s? you can read about some of them in my new 24-page zine, Shareware Made Me Trans, coming to itch next week!

I've never had a SNES at home, but I've played the hell out of Goof Troop at summer camp with the marching band I was in as a kid.

Basically every moment of unscheduled time I was playing this hahah

ah yeah, I think Fender also makes these big single coil pick ups. The design reminds me of P90s but I guess not!

I've never played a guitar with P90s so I don't *really* know what they sound like, but I get the impression they have a distinct sound from single coils and humbuckers, but idk!

3 days ago 1 0 1 0

wow nice! are those p90s??

It is uncanny what you can make for free these days.

People are making entire feature length films on their phones, it's nuts!

- no data theft
- no ads
- no subscriptions
- what you have is yours
- no internet required
- a real object in your hands that you can look at and admire

Oh, and also, at least in the case of CDs: better audio quality than streaming

I've been playing a bunch of whentaken.com and it's shocking how I can't tell the difference between the 2010s and 2020s.

I tell myself it's because fashion hasn't changed, but I fear it's because I'm so old I don't pick up on what's hip.

Wait, do people say hip?

I haven't played it since it originally came out, but I'll have another go now!

I can't believe they managed to turn a 25 year old game into a 15 GB download though lol

Yeah, on top of of the ethical and moral concerns (data taken without consent, impact on the environment) and the fact you can't trust the results.
