“Why should I care about Svalbard way up there in the Arctic?”
1.) The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is the global “doomsday” vault for human food security. With climate change warming the Arctic 4Xs faster than the rest of 🌎🌍🌏, this seed vault is at risk.

The best Taco Bell in the world.
YES!
A huge shoutout to @emilyfairfax.bsky.social for serving as a beaver and fire scientist to the movie. I watched it last night with kids and we had a blast.
In Peru, native stingless bees have become the first insects to be granted legal rights in the world. 🌎
The decision follows collaboration with Indigenous communities to document the bees.

If you blink on drive up the hill to Tech’s SDC and hockey arena, you’d miss the USFS research station.
Of course, we’d all miss its research and extension output focused on the hemiboreal and northern forests of the Great Lakes.

If you’d like to learn more about heat shields, including the Artemis I and Artemis II heat shields developed at NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, this is a good place to start:

Artemis II Return NASA's Orion spacecraft carrying Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch from NASA, along with Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen from the CSA (Canadian Space Agency), splashes down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, California, at 5:07 p.m. PDT, (8:07 p.m. EDT) on Friday, April 10, 2026. The Artemis II test flight launched on Wednesday, April 1, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to begin its 10-day journey around the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to build on our foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars. NASA’s Landing and Recovery team and the U.S. military are coordinating efforts to extract the Artemis II crew from the Orion spacecraft. Credit: NASA/Josh Valcarcel
What a great photo just added on the NASA Johnson Flickr page www.flickr.com/photos/nasa2...
I have to drive in LA today.
Pray for me.
Humans are the farthest from Earth as we’ve been.
Soon, the imagery will be downloaded to be reviewed by scientists.
Tomorrow, the crew will talk with the science team to get their personal insight.

In my humble and personal opinion, I concur with this.
In addition, NASA Earth Science writ large - the data, models, science, technology, and satellites- are relied upon by over 70% of Fortune 500 companies. The ROI for NASA Exploration and Science is huge.

A fave of mine so far is Mission Specialist Koch looking back at the Earth. The first woman on a lunar mission looking back at the mother of all humans.

Sno Park, California State Park, Echo Summit, April 2026.
Enjoying what’s left of the snow in the Sierras. Near Echo Summit, more than 2,000 meters asl.
Early April should be peak snow pack.
There’s enough wrinkles and dye jobs to cover burgeoning grey hair to give you a clue that the men pictured are not Gen Z.
A reminder that anyone in their late 20s, 30s, and early 40s is technically a Millennial.

I spent the day with amazing students, staff, & faculty at UC Merced - talking about NASA, how they should see themselves as part of NASA’s future workforce, + handing out swag.
Cherry on top was streaming party for Artemis II. This further excited our next generation of scientists & explorers!
Infilling existing cities and towns with dense mixed income housing and cheap reliable public transportation and preventing more suburban/exurban sprawl is the fastest way to reduce current & future wildfire risks in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) everywhere.

As the Girl Scouts say, the cook makes the camp.
New Brunswick has already experienced some fire activity.
Like western North America, these fires are a natural part of the landscape but caution needed to protect lives, property, & ecosystems (this is birthing season for most animals). Observe burn bans, more cultural & prescribed fire needed.
Springtime is wildfire season throughout much of Appalachia and the eastern seaboard of North America. This green-up period can experience flash droughts, whereby leaf litter from the previous fall is dry like kindling before the spring rains arrive. 🔥

Very, very true.
The California “small cities” are all suburbs in the Bay Area megalopolis of San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose.
Really great read and work by WRI!
Silvopastures are quite common in Appalachia, a traditional use of the land that maintains a higher tree biomass & allows for animal agriculture where flat pastures (bottomlands) are hard to come by. Perhaps subregional climate resiliency (shade, water impacts, wild food) may be there…
