With Radev's win in Bulgaria, imo, we'll see something new at the EU level-- advocacy for pro-Ru positions not from a euroskeptic position a la Orban/AfD/RN but from an ostensibly pro-EU position: Europe should abandon Ukr and go back to cheap Ru energy to be stronger and strategically autonomous.
Bulgaria’s been averaging 1.6 elections a year in recent years. Judging by the way things are going with today’s parliamentary election, we’ll probably keep that average going. Also, in a true East European fashion, we couldn’t just have two happy election outcomes in a row in the region, could we?😒

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.
Miscalculation of Rheinmetall CEO fails to grasp that the combination of what some might call “low” tech civilian with conventional weapons & tactics is what makes Ukraine’s fight innovative.
But what drives civilian engagement? - we have a NEW paper about that! www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

📌Finding 3: Loyalists also oppose such reforms more consistently than legislators incorporated into oligarchic networks through alternative influence strategies, such as post-election cooptation through media.
📌Finding 2: Legislators embedded in oligarchic networks through pre-existing personal ties (loyalists) are more likely than non-loyalists to vote against reform bills that create a level-playing field for all market actors, consistent with oligarchs’ economic interests.
The networks of pre-existing ties between oligarchs and legislators are structurally distinctive from other networks, including networks representing alternative oligarchic influence strategies like post-election cooptation through media.
📌Finding 1: Oligarchs promote as legislators individuals with whom they have pre-existing personal ties.
These ties take the form of a fragmented, loosely connected, and decentralized network with distinct clusters, in which oligarchs take central positions.

How do oligarchs shape policy outcomes in developing democracies?
I argue they do so through informal networks of legislators personally linked to them.
Using unique quantitative & qualitative evidence from Ukraine, I show that:
