Bonus: these methods preserve the stability properties of evolutionary equilibria as well. The projection method preserves Fisher's reproductive value (though only to the first order of selection).
Matrix calculus makes biology so easy!

Key result 2: low-dimensionalize the system. You can arbitrarily simplify the class-structure, which is simply a projection onto a reduced dimensional space. Meanwhile, this is mathematically identical to separating the timescales (i.e., quasi-equilibrium approximation).
Key result 1: determinant is great. The invasion condition R_0>1 is immensely simplified in a scalar form: -det(I–G)>0, where G is the next-generation matrix, and R_0=(spectral radius of G).

We unify numerous methodologies of adaptive dynamocs into a single framework we term “structural evolutionary invasion analysis.” If you have a class structure in your evolutionary model, consider applying this method!
Really amazing to see this out! Thanks to such dynamic researchers!
Thanks to @ryosukeiritani.bsky.social and iTHEMS @RIKEN for hosting us while we were working on this manuscript. 🙏🏽🇯🇵❤️🇬🇧

After reviewing nearly 200 applications from prospective grad students and postdocs over the past few months for a couple different 🧪⚒️ postings, here are some tips, at least as they apply to North American positions. I hope they help future applicants. Share with your networks. 🧵
As you know, Hiragino Mincho is kept updating. But I realized the latest version looks quite different from the previous one. Now pretty much resembles Haranoaji Mincho (which is also a nice font).
A paper critiquing post-publication peer review has numerous made-up references, including a @nature.com article falsely attributed to our Ivan Oransky.

#PlasticsTreaty
Plastics "recycling" is largely bullshit & has been for >50 years
NO "last chance" for human, climate, biodiversity & ocean-harming plastics—REGULATE plastic production
figure showing nine data points (each for a distinct publisher) in a graph where Y-axis is our open science index and X-axis is academia friendliness (=proportion of published journals co-owned by an academic entity); strong positive relationship
Non-profit publishers (PLoS, Oxford, Cambridge) and publishers partnering a lot with academia (Wiley) are much more committed to open science than the others - MDPI being the worst by large. (4/5)

Thank you to everyone attending the "Writing and DEI Workshop" at RIKENS, organized by @ryosukeiritani.bsky.social. Gender equality in STEM is a global issue and we need to share our experiences and learn from one another. Thank you for sharing your stories and enthusiasm! 🙏 and @ITHEms, @JSPS 🇯🇵❤️

1/3 I was just lucky enough to get to do a couple of sessions on scientific writing in a DEI & Writing Workshop at Riken, Tokyo. Huge thank you to @ryosukeiritani.bsky.social for organising such an open and supportive workshop, and all the attendees for being so engaged and interactive.
