š„Bargaining update, Session #2.
We were disappointed that Columbia did not present any counterproposals and continued to dismiss our membersā concerns surrounding job security and international workers rights. More ā¬ļø
ā©ļø Whatās next? We are bargaining with Columbia again Wednesday, April 29th. #cpw

Looks like I will be chairing the Lightning Round session on Aging and Womenās Health in Alzheimerās Disease and Related Dementia session at #AAIC2026. Iām very excited to share some of the #APOE4 specific lysosomal changes in the brains of female mice⦠See in London this July!
Hoe about people that donāt have gas/electricity? Canāt work from home if youāre freezing to death! These are unsafe circumstances especially for vulnerable people⦠also essential workers (sanitation workers for example) canāt work from home and they need to survive in freezing homes? Interesting.
Weāre calling on @governor.ny.gov to invest in the Empire Biomedical Research Institute. A robust, stable research ecosystem protects jobs, fuels innovation, and builds community health statewide. NY must invest in our global leadership in science.

Heck yea, a university that puts actions to words!
Letter from the NIH indicating that my grant has been terminated (though it seems we can keep the remaining funds for this year?)
Finally got the notice. Very sad day for the MOSAIC program that supported some of the most amazing scientists I know, as well as some of the awesome people on my lab.
No comment really.
This is so helpful, please keep doing what you do.

The Columbia Postdoctoral Workers Organizing Committee condemns the ICE detention of Mahmoud Khalil. We demand that Columbia restore its sanctuary campus policy and fight back against threats to the safety of international workers. Full statement here: drive.google.com/file/d/1pL4Z...
So the NIH grant terminations at Columbia turned out to be: -- all training grants (T series), which were all required to have extensive sections addressing diversity -- grad student and postdoc fellowships (F series) -- center and core grants (P series), including a cancer center, Alzheimer's center, diabetes center and more, and the vision core grant Michael Goldberg has been PI of for 17 years that provides shared facilities (machine shop, imaging, ...) for vision researchers -- a smattering of individual research grants, apparently targeting anything to do with covid, vaccines, or HIV, and including one study with title involving study of diverse tissues, i.e. with the verboten word diverse.
From my PhD advisor @kenmiller.bsky.social at Columbia. These are the grants that funded my PhD.
šØš§Ŗ Are you a researcher affected by the recent cancellation of federal grants and contracts at Columbia University?
I'm working on a story for @Nature.com. If you want to chat, your identity will be kept private.

For full alt text, follow pastebin link in next post. Partial text: Amy E. Greer, attorney for Mahmoud Khalil provided the following update this evening: First, importantly, today I spoke to Mahmoud and he is healthy and his spirits are undaunted by his predicament. He also greatly appreciates, and, typically for him, is moved by the extraordinarily broad and steadfast support he has received from a variety of communities that understand what is at stake. He is in ICE custody in Louisiana, and arrangements have been made for local attorneys to visit him today and tomorrow. The remarks by government officials, including the President, on social media only confirm the purpose ā and illegality ā of Mahmoud's detention. He was chosen as an example to stifle entirely lawful dissent in violation of the First Amendment. While tomorrow or thereafter the government may cite the law or process, that toothpaste is out of the tube and irreversibly so. The governmentās objective is as transparent as it is unlawful, and our role as Mahmoudās lawyers is to ensure it does not prevail. Today Mahmoud's legal team, which includes Kyle Barron, CLEAR, the Center for Constitutional Rights, the American Civil Liberties Union, and Amy Greer filed a motion to compel in federal court in the Southern District of New York, as part of the habeas corpus petition filed on his behalf over the weekend, seeking an order requiring the government to return to New York for any immigration proceedings.
UPDATE on Mahmoud Khalil from his lawyers and his wife: "Today I spoke to Mahmoud and he is healthy and his spirits are undaunted by his predicament." (Legal team now includes ACLU, CCR.)

ā¼ļøCheck your email, we sent out info yesterday for the postdoc townhall Friday March 14.
Yep, 100% agree, theyāve been so quiet in their comm to us as well, they donāt want to do or say anything that could result in even the slightest liability. Itās clear that their only priority is money but theyāve totally shot themselves in the footā¦
If youāre a @columbiauniversity.bsky.social postdoc, please contact me so I can share our union information on town halls and organizing strategies with you.
I guess this isnāt an American thing for grad school, but cold emailing PIs with your interests and asking for PhD position possibilities is the best way imo.
They better extend the k99/R00 time cap to 5 years then⦠otherwise and entire generation of postdocs will lose the opportunity to start their independent career with help of this mechanism.
āWhen we come together as unionized researchers, we can have a lot of power,ā Isabel Low, a neuroscience postdoc at Columbia
So proud to be organizing with all these resilient scientists, together we stand ā

Hundreds of NYC academic workers and allies came together yesterday as part of a National Day of Action to #DefendPublicResearch funding. They say cut back, we say fight back! ā
Would also be nice if Columbia takes a stance in sociopolitical activismā¦

Find local organizations in your area, or join your union in organizing efforts to participate in rallies and national actions. Eg tomorrow is a national day of action, scientist unions are organizing rallies all over the country!
I love how Columbia single handedly disrupted the west Harlem community and destroyed local business, but then itās like ālook we post about black historyā.. ppffff youāre not fooling anyone šā
How funny would it be if someone would write a code to overload and crash the zoom link, for no other reason than just being petty.
Every single time a paper comes out with just another piece of evidence that cognitively healthy people can have a brain loaded with amyloid and therefore itās pathological role in AD is questionable, my petty self just thinks āsee I told you šš«¢š

I actually just birthed and submitted an entire K99/R00, 3 months of my blood, sweat, and sanity. All I can say is, I wouldnāt be here today without our grants coordinator, the real MVP, always organized, always on top of it, gentle reminders and words of encouragement ⨠ITS ACTUALLY OVER šŖ©
