An oasis in the desert that is currently the North #Bristol #poetry scene. Bring a poem of your own to read ... and one by someone else (time permitting). Or just come to listen and patronise the bar ...

The first issue of the resurrected poetry journal, Outposts - with a monochrome retro cover - lies on a blue linen runner.

On this #WorldPoetryDay, I’m delighted to commend the resurrected #poetry journal ‘Outposts’. It’s a real honour to have three poems in this first issue, rubbing shoulders with work by so many of my poetry heroes.

A green woodpecker feather against the forest floor

A green woodpecker feather against the forest floor

I struggle to feel a sense of achievement, but today I’ve had news that's put all of spring – bluebells, chiffchaffs, the lot – in my step: that Peter Roe & Izzy Robertson of Jawbone Journal have nominated my poem, A brief feather confession, for a Forward Prize. Many thanks to them both #poetry

Natalie Diaz reading on a dark stage beneath a projected banner with a photo of herself

Natalie Diaz reading on a dark stage beneath a projected banner with a photo of herself

Fantastic reading by Natalie Diaz for the @bristolpoetry.bsky.social last night. It’s rare for my attention to be corralled and focused for five minutes, let alone over an hour, but these poems managed it. I made my way home in that holy space that is the aftermath of a great poetry experience.

A white goat stands in the middle of a ruined ring of heavy anti-aircraft batteries dating from World War II and now covered in graffiti. The surrounding grass is puddled with rain and there are bare trees behind against a grey sky.

I'm 64. I fall over quite a lot but it's definitely just falling over.

It's January in the UK and I spotted all of these ladybirds on a stretch of wall today at Snuff Mills in Bristol.

Tell me again how #climatechange is a hoax.

Patti Smith on the ‘sacred wounds’ of grief
Patti Smith on the ‘sacred wounds’ of grief YouTube video by CNN

I kept having to rewind this because I was getting distracted by the thoughts it provoked, but it’s absolutely life- and death-affirming and will repay the (probably rather shorter) time it might take you to listen.

Patti Smith, hero. And what a great series of podcasts.

What happened next: how a shocking rape and murder case was solved – 58 years later In Portishead, a dusty box of forgotten files led Jo Smith and her team to a criminal who had escaped justice for more than half a century. This was the longest-running cold case to be solved in the U...

Securing justice for her grandmother, Louisa, has been transformative for my friend, Mary. Cold cases should never be closed. Murderers should never be able to think they're off the hook.

Sorry about your dog. I wish Cwtch would cuddle up but she just wants to hide away.

Thanks. I used to drive half an hour up the motorway and back at 11.30pm on New Years Eve with my old collie, Ted, who was maddened by them and barked endlessly. Great way for both of us to see in the New Year ... ☹️
