School pride is one of the top motivators for purchasing a special-design license plate, with two colleges way out in front. Washington State University was the No. 1 special-design plate, generating about $734,000 from nearly 24,100 plates. The University of Washington ranked sixth with roughly $313,000 from around 10,300 plates.
WA specialty license places. I’m going to venture this discrepancy is because WSU people are more likely to have car brain and see cars as an expression of their identity than UW people @thewaroncars.bsky.social @seattlebikeblog.com @seattletru.bsky.social @seattletransitblog.com @theurbanist.org

Everyone on the west coast (and rest
of the world) laughs
Yeah, not widely used simply as name of city. No one would say “I’m from Beantown” or “I’m visiting Beantown this weekend.”
Which US cities, other than Philly and Cincy, are widely and regularly known by diminutive-sounding nicknames?

After being delayed due to the war with Iran, the Jerusalem Marathon will take place early tomorrow morning. However, as dangerously high temperatures have been forecast, the full-marathon race has been called off.
If war doesn’t do this region in, climate change will.

Yeah it’s a bit cold in Seattle right now. Anyone missing temps in the 30s? Come thisaways.

NYT spelling bee hates bikes
For me it really was too hilly to even consider biking for transportation/commuting until I learned about e-bikes. They are a true game changer in Seattle.
Rain pants and waterproof shoes are your friend
I regularly do things *farther* away by ebike than I would have by car because it is so frictionless. Hop over to get takeout during rush hour from a different neighborhood? Sure, why not?
The signal at Bagley makes lots of sense to keep regardless because of Irwin’s. If 40th gets upzoned as planned I hope that lots more small businesses like that will open on lots of corners.

Google street view showing 2nd Ave dead ending on a street with no curb cuts between it and bike trail beyond
There are signs indicating that the bike route from Thackeray in Wallingford to the BGT goes down 2nd Ave. But follow that route, and you meet Pacific at a spot where there are no curb cuts to get onto the trail. What gives? What are we expected to do here? @qagggy.bsky.social @seattlebikeblog.com
I’d love if media outlets could stop referring to ceasefire talks as “peace talks.” Ceasefire ≠ peace.
This plan would be great but baffling that they wouldn’t take advantage of the beacons already at bagley/40th to run the greenway on bagley after 44th. It would require just sharrows, signage, and stop signs at x-streets to do what I marked . Some work at 50th and 45th with x-walks would help.
What does the map of the sunnyside greenway look like? They’d need a crossing at 40th, and sunnyside doesn’t connect to the bgt.
Would also make sense to connect it up one block to the Green Lake loop though this would involve a short stretch on 65th, an arterial, so that would have to be figured out.
Has there ever been talk of making this route a neighborhood greenway? It connects to three schools (Green Lake, McDonald, Meridian), the BGT, Gas works park, and the healthy st at 44th. There are already signals at the 50th, 45th , and 40th crossings. @qagggy.bsky.social @seattlebikeblog.com
“Iran has been unable to open the Strait of Hormuz to more shipping traffic because it cannot locate all of the mines it laid in the waterway and lacks the capability to remove them, according to U.S. officials.”
Thankfully I spent many hours playing Minesweeper in the 1990s so we should be good.
