That's what happened to me when I tried NaNoWriMo many years ago. I wrote a lot of words, sure, but I also had no idea what it was I wrote LOL.

I think my version of "make it exist first" is writing out a summary of my ideas in extremely dry prose, and then turn that into a fic.

I know exactly what you mean! I just cannot dash off a first draft that is terrible because I will only hate it and not want anything to do with it, because it is terrible lol. My first drafts always have some degree of polish (I do edit somewhat as I write)

First draft is for telling yourself the story, revisions are for telling your readers the story.
