But it doesn't have to be this way. We could have thriving food systems that work with nature.
The dairy industry is expanding. More than 30,000 cows are set to be added to the Canterbury plains - meaning industry emissions will increase even more.
While we're being hit by more and more dangerous climate disasters, intensive dairy emissions are increasing.
Dairy is New Zealand's worst climate polluter. It makes up more than a quarter of our greenhouse gas emissions.
The latest data on NZ's greenhouse gas emissions just dropped, and here's what you need to know.
In 2024, the increase in emissions from the intensive dairy industry was the same as adding 100,000 more cars to NZ's roads.
Here's why that's a big deal. 🧵

If you’re in Auckland next Tuesday come along to a screening of ‘How to change the world’ - a story of the start of the modern environmental movement.

PM Luxon said in February the deal was only in preliminary form. Yet MBEI documents show the deal could have been signed in February.
This minerals deal puts US military greed for minerals ahead of the interests of people in Aotearoa. Tell Luxon - no minerals deal!
greenpeace.nz/no-minerals-...
NZ officials say a minerals deal could impact NZ’s other international obligations and relationships.
The NZ Herald says other risks were redacted from documents supplied by MBEI, and some information was supplied by mistake, which they then requested be deleted.
NZ officials say the deal may raise public concerns and risk public social licence. Māori stakeholder groups have identified concerns with engagement with the USA given ‘recent geopolitical developments’ (for example, its bombing of Iran).
The USA’s stated focus of their use of ‘critical’ minerals is military technologies - which isn’t aligned with New Zealand’s stated focus of a clean energy transition.
Officials from MBEI (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment) know the USA wants a minerals deal with New Zealand to supply minerals for military needs. They say minerals have become a ‘key sovereign security consideration’ for major world powers. 'Security' is another way of saying military
Last week NZ Foreign Minister Winston Peters met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. To talk about what? A minerals deal between NZ and the USA.
A NZ Herald story today shows the risks of this deal with the USA 🧵 1/8

The Government has allowed the Ruataniwha Dam to be brought back to life, through the Fast Track Approvals Act - despite the Supreme Court shutting it down in 2017.
This will lead to more intensive dairy expansion. More cows, and more destruction.
But we've fought this before, and won. And we're willing to do it again if that's what it takes.
This is Government-subsidised environmental destruction.
The Ruataniwha Dam will lead to a huge range of environmental harm - from polluted drinking water, to reduced water flows in other rivers, to the destruction of 22 hectares of conservation land.
The Government just gave $18 million to an illegal dirty dairy dam which will flood precious conservation land. Here's the details 🧵 (1/5) #nzpol
While world governments have lacked the courage and conviction to uphold international law and their obligation to prevent genocide in Gaza, the Sumud Flotilla is a beacon of global solidarity and symbol of hope in action.
Follow the flotilla’s journey globalsumudflotilla.org
Greenpeace’s Arctic Sunrise ship is providing support to the flotilla so that vessels can safely transit the Mediterranean before they complete the last 200 nautical miles to Gaza’s shores.
We stand firmly against war crimes, deliberate starvation, genocide, and ecocide.
Hundreds of medics, teachers, and eco-builders, with expertise in healthcare, education, and sustainable rebuilding, are sailing to support the people of Gaza.
The flotilla is a call for governments to act with urgency and principle.
On April 12, the #GlobalSumudFlotilla sails with 70+ vessels and 1000+ participants to break Israel’s ongoing blockade of aid to #Gaza.
Greenpeace ship the Arctic Sunrise is providing operational and technical support.

The Luxon Government is choosing roads over people and oil over our future. While they blow the budget on billion-dollar road projects and fossil fuel expansion, everyday New Zealanders are being crushed by the cost of fuel.
It's time for the nitrate limit for drinking water to be lowered in line with current health science.

We asked politicians to drink nitrate-contaminated water from rural kitchen taps. 90% of them said no.
While rural communities face increased health risks as a result of nitrate contamination, politicians are failing to act. #nzpol
“Fonterra claimed that its Anchor Butter was ‘100% New Zealand grass-fed’, but that isn’t true. Fonterra dairy cows can be fed up to three kilograms of palm kernel a day - an imported feed linked to rainforest destruction." - Sinéad Deighton-O'Flynn, Greenpeace
www.nzherald.co.nz/business/fon...
The Commerce Commission found that Fonterra's "100% NZ Grass Fed" label was likely to mislead consumers, due to all the palm kernel feed. But the CC did nothing, so Fonterra just kept using the label. So Greenpeace sued them under the Fair Trading Act. www.greenpeace.org/aotearoa/sto...
