Carney’s fuel tax pause rewards polluters.
Instead of capturing windfall profits for the public good, Ottawa is bankrolling fossil fuel companies and starving services needed during the #climatecrisis.

While this will help some households with gas prices, this is not the solution we need - Big Oil is profiting immensely from this crisis, now those profits will come at the expense of our public services as well as workers' paychecks. We should be redistributing those profits not our public services
Our ED, Jared A. Walker, and economist, @silasxuereb.bsky.social, in @canadiandimension.bsky.social on the urgent need for an excess profits tax on oil & gas: canadiandimension.com/articles/vie...
This conversation happened in no small part thanks to recent excellent reports published by @c4tf.bsky.social with @bcpolicy.bsky.social and @oxfamcanada.bsky.social (I'll link both below).
Also highly recommend the second half of the episode featuring @jimbostanford.bsky.social.
@c4tf.bsky.social and @bcpolicy.bsky.social found that, in 2023, 86 billionaire families held as much wealth as Canada’s 6.2 million least wealthy families.
The big question for @dylandusseault.bsky.social is how to fix it?

Recently our senior economist Alex Hemingway with @c4tf.bsky.social Silas Xuereb authored the report The New Robber Barons: A Quarter Century of Wealth Concentration in Canada.
Read an interview with Silas in Jacobin
We wrote about our report on wealth concentration with @bcpolicy.bsky.social in @thetyee.ca. If we don’t create better economic equality in Canada, we’re on a fast track to oligarchy…
NEW: Canada’s richest 1 per cent have nearly as much wealth as its poorest 80 per cent combined.

Canada’s biggest corporations made a record $677B in profits last year. Yet the share they pay in taxes has never been lower, and investment is lagging.
Jared Walker and @silasxuereb.bsky.social of @c4tf.bsky.social ask: If tax cuts worked, wouldn’t we have seen the results by now?
Canadian oil profits for the Big 4 are set to soar as the US/Israel strikes on Iran rattle global markets. 📈
While prices spike, Cdn producers could reap a "risk premium." We should tax these windfall profits to invest in future-proof, climate-resilient energy.
We need a windfall tax on O&G now.
As you fill up with gas that's now up 20c/litre in a week, remember who profits. Cdn oil companies made $150b after-tax profit after the last oil spike (2022). An excess profit tax redistributed to consumers would ease the pain. My take in @thestar.com: www.thestar.com/business/opi...

Automatic tax filing is long-overdue. Yet tax filing giants have been investing in major lobbying efforts to block it. It would put billions in unpaid benefits in the hands of low-income Canadians and greatly improve accessibility. We need our government to make this happen, once and for all.
🚨NEW REPORT:
Our new report, along with our friends at BC Policy Solutions, estimates wealth concentration in Canada from 1999-2023. We find that the share of wealth owned by the top 1% increased from 19.3% to 22.7% over this period.
www.taxfairness.ca/en/resources...
The wealthiest 1% of families in Canada owned 22.7% of wealth in 2023, up from 19.3% in 1999, seeing a total increase of $3 trillion over that period.

Wealth inequality is a growing issue in Canada and our tax system must be overhauled to tax high-end wealth and capital income more effectively in order to benefit the public good, shows a new report by Silas Xuereb & Alex Hemingway
Our friends @c4tf.bsky.social have a new report examining the true levels of wealth inequality in Canada, and it's impact on our democracy.
One shocking stat: billionaire wealth grew 37.2% between 2023 and 2025 while total household wealth only grew 9.3%.
www.taxfairness.ca/en/resources...
Wealth concentration in Canada is problem - @c4tf.bsky.social has a new report out on exactly how much of a problem and what we should do about it: www.taxfairness.ca/en/resources...
After 25 years of extreme wealth concentration, the top 1% own 23% of the wealth—up $3 trillion.
Our new report w/ @bcpolicy.bsky.social sounds the alarm: to protect our democracy & sovereignty, we need to stop our slide into US-style oligarchy.

In our latest for The Breach, Jared and I do a deep dive on how continued tax haven abuse is not just despite our government policy - it's because of our government policy.
