EXCITING! The Cambridge Press site now has a page for the CAMRBIDGE HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL LAW, VOL. II: INT’L LAW IN ASIA—My chapter in it tells the story of twentieth-century Indian readings of India’s ancient inter-polity law

It’s a blast to see my poem, “Either Too Trivial or Else Too Important to be Discussed,” appear in LONDON (Great Cities vol 2). The poem, one of my refracted ekphrases, engages Monica Ali’s novel, “Brick Lane,” and its film adaptation by Sarah Gavron. (3 linked posts)
I’m very grateful to the “Santa Clara Review” for publishing my poem in their special “California Edition”—written a few years back with rain coming all of a sudden in a year hit by severe drought following other drought years.
Saira Mohamed of UC Berkeley Law has provided an excellent primer regarding the illegality of the Maduro extraction and the boat strikes in the Caribbean. It might seem overtaken by events in the Middle East—but the illegal throughline is worth understanding.

I’ve been having nightmares—unfortunately while I’m awake—that Trump will announce a strike on Iran DURING his State-of-the-Union speech. Can he resist such drama?
My new article, “WE OWN IT, SO WE CAN BREAK IT: THE TRUMP NATIONAL SECURITY STRATEGY 2025 AS SKELETON KEY" was just published by VERFASSUNGSBLOG. Hope this contributes to the understanding of Trump's foreign policy.

A very meaningful event, “A Courage of Poets,” at the State Capitol Building, in remembrance of Renée Good, Alex Pretti, and all other victims of ICE known and unknown. Poets each read three lines followed by California poet laureate Lee Herrick with a poem recognizing our grave moment.
Stuart, thanks for highlighting.
Two of my poems—my “refracted ekphrases” on film adaptations—just appeared on “Verseville.” One on “The Pawnbroker” and the other on Vijay Anand’s adaptation Narayan’s “The Guide.”

I’m excited—I just signed a contract with Sagging Meniscus Press for my first book of poetry, THE REEL AND THE PAPERBACK: REFRACTED EKPHRASES, to come out in Fall 2027.
I am absolutely sure it's not a bad draft!
My review of LAUREN BENTON’s book on colonial ‘small wars’ just came out. Laurie does as convincingly global history as anyone in the history of law, tying wonderfully sculpted microhistories from various continents to a larger picture.

The SF Chronicle just published its obituary for my good friend, Jack Foley. They justly gave him a lot of words, but there was always more to say about this wonderfully many-sided person with so many deep talents. Here, the overused Whitman “I contain multitudes” fits!

Yesterday's handover!
I am thrilled to be the new #ASLH president, receiving the gavel yesterday from former president Barbara Welke at our Detroit conference awards ceremony. My term is 2025-27. Excited to get to work! #legalhistory
Here’s the flyer for my reading with Lucille Lang Day sponsored by the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center on Saturday, Nov. 22 in Turlock! The MoST poets are a great group—so I’m really eager to share with them!
Trump announced new nuclear tests, the first since George Bush (père) instituted a moratorium in 1992. He said the when and where are TBD—we all know that he has Chicago and Portland in mind. Oh, and the Supreme Court will say it’s under his Constitutional powers.

My talk in D.C., Mon, 3 Nov, at Johns Hopkins SAIS on modern India and its engagement with its ancient interpolity order. If you’d like to attend, I need to supply names to the organizers.
Just voted YES ON 50! Dropbox on Moraga Ave., Oakland, CA.
Wondered where the room was for off-putting men.
Because of the states with legislative elections this November, I just made a contribution to the DEMOCRATIC LEGISLATIVE CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE—the national organization funding Democratic candidates in key state legislative races, which Democrats have too long ignored.

Time set, Monday, Nov. 3, 12:30—I’ll be giving a talk at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) on modern India and its engagement with its ancient interpolity order. (flyer to come)
“Exacting Clam” #18 is out with my poem, “Innocent Man on the Run,” on Alfred Hitchcock’s adaptation of Richard Buchan’s 1915 novel, The Thirty-Nine Steps, quite different from Hitchcock’s replotting.
How fun! The Mary McCarthy Society republished my poem on Sidney Lumet’s adaptation of Mary McCarthy’s “The Group”! Thanks to Mary McCarthy scholar, Sabrina Fuchs Abrams, author of Mary McCarthy: Gender, Politics and the Postwar Intellectual (2004)!

Her workshops are incredible--I've gain an immense amount from them.
