Before (2011) / After (2026) Rue du Commandant Mouchotte, Paris 14. Photo 2011 by G. Vellut on Flickr. A change finished a few weeks ago. Lining up with rows of trees at an unknown focal length is tricky, here the result is not perfect, but I think the core of the before / after is there ;)

I’ve had this on my list since last February. Definitely a sign I need to follow up!
I would love to know how many U.S. families have lost multiple members to traffic violence, especially in separate crashes. Because this is not the first story on a husband and wife dying in exactly the same place that I've reported, and unless something changes, it definitely won't be the last.
An older brick St. Louis house with dormers
An older St. Louis style house but the front facade has fallen off. Bricks are neatly stacked in front. You can see inside the second floor, first floor is boarded up
A block full of brick houses and duplexes
A brick and stone church
Decided to go back to Penrose, a St. Louis neighborhood I keep finding so charming. Finished 1 street in my 4 mile walk of zigzagging to fill in a blocks width between Natural Bridge and Bircher

My latest.
I’ve been watching the media coverage of the murders of Dr. Cerina Fairfax and Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer.
One way media can fight back against male violence:
If you kill your wife, you don’t get to be called a “husband” any more.
You’re her killer.

All without FEMA. Mostly funded by ordinary citizens. Source: Report of the St. Louis tornado of September 29, 1927 / by the Joint Committee of the Engineers' Club of St. Louis and St. Louis Chapter, American Institute of Architects
babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=md...
This joint committee was appointed and organized about four weeks atter the tornado, and while personal inspection trips were made through the tornado zonc, critical observation was handicapped to some extent by the work of demolition and reconstruction which had made considerable progress by that time.
Relief work continued over a period of several werks. gradually developing into the more carefully studied problem of rehabilitation. A fund of over one million dollars, ninety per cent of which had been contributed by the citizens of St. Louis. was placed at the disposal of a special committee of thirty-two prominent St. Louisans appointed by the Red Cross. The work of this committee was performed in a most careful and systematie man-ner. each case coming before it being made a mat-
ter of individual study. Within less than four months help had been given to over fifty-five hundred families and the money distributed as equitably as possible.
When I see people ask what more STL can do, I go back to the 1927 tornado. In 4 weeks after the tornado, the reconstruction and demolition had progressed so far that engineers had to rely on photos to study the tornado's effects. In under 4 months, more than 5500 families had direct cash aid.
You are wiser than me.
I need to see some energy for sidewalks on the SLU owned properties in The Gate District
Two men promised 3D-printed homes would bring back this small town. They said God had sent them. State officials endorsed them.
So why is there just one cracked duplex?
@propublica.org and @capitolnewsil.bsky.social have this mystery out today:

Unfortunately the social media comments on the St. Louis Public Radio story on Instagram and Facebook have brought out the worst in people.
Just heard the pedestrian bridge over Forest Park and Metrolink is finally having some work done. Long overdue given that this is the state of things
White people from south city will be more mad at a disruption or protestors than the fact that the city has done next to nothing for north city and tornado relief.
PLANT SALE FIRST WEEKEND IN MAY SATURDAY SUNDAY 8AM-2PM
FOOD BANK Take what you need leave what you can In front of the community garden
Cyclist riding on the street, dodging a spire dirt pile
A mom and child from behind, child is wearing a backpack and walking on a short retaining wall. They are holding hands.
Just a short neighborhood walk today. I kept thinking of all the little moments of joy and community I see close to home that I rarely capture. So here’s our community garden with its annual plant sale and its food bank, cyclists enjoying our streets, and a mom walking her child home. This is STL.
I swear that when I get in the flown of redlining that it’s like I hear music and a melody. I never redlined a healthcare MSA until last summer but now I have the rhythm. Unfortunately every time I get an urgent email mid-redline it’s like the percussion guy in band who can’t stop dropping cymbals.
I'm really not interested in hearing what's "best for Saint Louis" from people beholden to the likes of Bob Clark and Paul McKee.
Barzantny making demo-by-neglect progress with another fire last night at one of his vacant buildings. This time at 4534 Manchester. 4538 next door had a fire in 2024
You know what would make streets, roads, highways safer?
Make people on streets w/o vehicles the #1 priority
Treat a driver killing someone with their vehicle as a real crime with real consequences
In rural areas, quit issuing restricted licenses to people who are blind and have no motor skills
I almost said with certainty it was 2 years back but it was just April 2025. I feel like I’ve lived a lifetime since then.
Remember that business owners opposing improvements here are concerned that drivers won’t be able to leave the city as fast as possible after an event. One would think business owners would encourage people to linger and enjoy their bars and restaurants but unfortunately many are car pilled too.
A related problem: We've reduced transpo planning to making lists of things that transpo engineers will be doing.
Induced demand is a PLANNING issue. We need real transportation plans, that seek to accomplish multiple societal goals, relate to land use, and aren't necessarily crafted by engineers.
Cracked, buckled sidewalk
80% underwater sidewalk
Map of pictured sidewalks: East side of Kingshighway on the south half of the park.
The west sidewalk is in disrepair.
I think about him a lot when I’m downtown. (I swear I have normal hobbies too)
When I walked it recently I was thinking it was a good thing I was getting it in before the next break. It just had this energy that made me nervous, or maybe that was my previous walk to the sinkhole influencing me.
Today’s the day! I finally have no activities planned (other than my job, boo) and can start to rest. I did a ton of physical and community activities the past 10 days and my heart rate never even got close to 200bpm. But to keep that going, I need to chill. So I will!
From the board of police commissioners that issues a headshot with their long-ass statement, they suddenly have nothing to say to the media when asked about their plan to antagonize citizens of St. Louis
We had no idea what was under the aluminum siding of this little shotgun house - but what a surprise. This is what it looked like when we started. We didn’t even know it was brick. Just a vacant structure totally covered by aluminum siding.
It’s a beautiful home now. Such detail on the arches. Look at that stained glass arch! That was hidden under the siding. a lovely porch upon which to sit.
We had no reason to go so hard on this south city renovation other than we love beauty and want to be the landlords we always craved. We call it a community building exercise.
I think I've gotten so spoiled over the years with Watch to Warning that the frequency of Warning alerts first is freaking me out.
I was so unprepared. I was about to take the dogs out and could not figure out why someone’s alarm was going off while I was out there
