On a 32bit build, you can still run a 16bit NE binary from windows 3.0. Not just 3.1, even. This remains fucking mind blowing to me.

I want you all to consider that you can take most x86-32 PE binaries that ran on windows 95 or NT 3.5, and as long as they're not hitting the hardware directly (remember: both of those predate directx by a while...), and you can run them today on windows 11

That is fucking insane.

A lot of people don't know that Popeye was one of the primary inspirations used by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster to create Superman long before the two icons became studio mates at Fleischer Studios.

Real recognizing real right here.

I dig it.

sync pulses are a challege, but otherwise it's very buildable. the actual reason for the initial 30 line standard is they literally broadcast on BBC AM radio in the off hours, and that's what fit in that bandwidth

30 Line Mechanical TV - a clone of the Baird Televisor

www.cool386.com/televisor/te... is one set of instructions for it - essentially you need a nipkow disk, which is just a circular card with some holes punched in it, an LED that can update quickly, an op-amp, and you hook it to the output of a soundcard since you can do this in 20khz of bandwidth

I remain obsessed with early television. One of my fiends once built a baird 30 line mechanical TV, and I want to build my own version of it.

Having lunch with my FIL at that place that does the awesome 90s throwback salad with the goat cheese and the baby greens and the toasted pecans and the raspberry vinaigrette

it’s like a dessert salad

That would be fantastic, but sadly I find it unlikely :(. Every linux phone i've seen in the wild has so much android stuff side loaded onto it, it might as well be a AOSP android at that point

It's the spam problem again - every solution is a comprimise :(

1 hour ago 1 0 0 0

But honestly, I'm not sure what the solution here is otherwise - play protect has absolutely not been good enough, despite the assertions of the linked page. The other way would be looking out cross-app intents, so now you can't have any app get to messages, and that's also sub-optimal.

The (not great) theory of developer ID, si that criminals won't give google government ID, so now will have this 24h cooling off period before people cna install their malware, which is long enough to discourage people who don't know what they're doing. But it is a massive block in the middle.

1 hour ago 1 0 1 0

The stated reason for the cooling off period - and reasonable people can disagree about googles motivation here - is there's been a LOT of drive by malware hidden in game APKs that say "turn on unverified apps and load our apk to play". Most android malware is currently delivered this way.

They've actually defined the process - the key data point that people are mad about, is there's a 24h cooling off period

(the process they've defined is: go to developer mode, which you have to do by clicking the build number 7 times, then allow unverified, enter pin, reboot, wait 24h for cooling)

people are constantly being wrong about things at work, and it is frustrating me that I need to treat my coworkers like intelligent adults becuase apparently I am a fucking grown up who has to treat people like actual humans with agency and not just systems and being a human is fucking dumb

Yeah, it's one I pull out from time to time, and is acutally one our kids have also enjoyed in a modern context - it gets a lot of very modern things right, imho.

I love the phrase " the systematic replacement of the real world with a brightly lit simulation of “niceness.”"

When the first women graduated, I asked a crusty ol' (complimentary) tabbed-out First Sergeant what he thought. He reminded me that the class had suffered a lightning strike that took dozens of people out, and said, "Well, God took his best shot and missed, so they must have passed."

I've had to explain to multiple (two) people that AGA amiga is not OCS amiga, and not the same amiga as the one released in 85/86.
