Florida district won't renew teacher's contract for using student's preferred name Dozens of students held a walkout to protest the school district’s decision not to renew the teacher’s contract after she used a student’s preferred name.

A Florida school district said it won’t renew the contract of a teacher who used a student’s preferred name, instead of legal name, without parental permission, in violation of state law.

If you're in congress and you aren't publicly in favor of banning the trading of individual stocks by people in congress, get your head out of your fucking ass.

They tried to pass a similar law in Mississippi.

We had our “practice” state test yesterday so I was allowed to read while proctoring(we aren’t allowed during the real test). As we are covering Carter and Reagan’s administration this week, I thought I’d dig into this. Reagan and his cronies were so shady.

I’m finishing the final book in the founding of Valdemar. I always admire her imagination and world building!

Rumor is that Mississippi will eliminate the U.S. history test from the accountability model. I feel split on this issue. They are keeping all other secondary state tests, so it is an interesting time to de-emphasize history. While state tests are problematic, so is cutting only history.

“Red Winter” is a Jack Ryan novel written by Marc Cameron. Chronologically this book comes after “Red Rabbit”, and is focused on East Berlin and the Stasi. What a crazy time and place in history, 5 out of 5!

Rereading “Red Rabbit” by Tom Clancy as my U.S. history class digs into the Cold War. Honestly, it is such an interesting look into the American mindset of the era.

“Murder at Astor Place” is the first of Victoria Thompson’s Gaslight Series. These murder mysteries follow a midwife in New York at peak gilded age. This series explores the horrific conditions of this era while providing an entertaining narrative. I love the lead character! 4 out of 5

Rereading this cozy fantasy before reading this sequel. “Assistant to the Villain” follows Eve as she works for a mysterious man known only as “The Villian”. Sometimes the bad guy isn’t who you think it is! 4.7 out of 5

Private equity strikes again! I never cared much for Red Lobster, but now Joann’s is closing 500 stores.

Mercedes Lackey excels at slipping historical details into her stories. She reveals details of how people were abused and exploited in the past, focusing mostly on women and children. I will never forget a haunting description of a London orphanage in the Victorian era in “The Wizard of London”.

I’m finally getting to read the latest in Mercedes Lackey’s Elemental Masters series-“The Silver Bullets of Annie Oakley”. This is book 16, and I adore these stories. She twists folklore and fairytales into new adventures with strong, independent heroines. 5 out of 5 always!

The older I get the more I hate female characters written by men.

I have books/book series I love, but the dystopian vibes are too similar to what is happening now. I remember reading this series during the 2016 election and fearing what a DJT presidency would mean. My fears are sadly manifesting.

Some books are perfect for a moment in time. “The Once and Future Witches” is a reminder of how many rights women have had to fight for.

Do you have a literary ick? Extreme age gaps with a teen girl and a 100+ year old magical/mythical creature is just icky.

In 2024 I challenged myself to read 150 books, and I completed the challenge. I didn’t like it though, it made me feel rushed. I couldn’t linger over long books. This year I read what I want and what I enjoy! The “To Green Angel Tower” audiobook is 58 hours, and it feels like a luxury.

One of my greatest frustrations as a teacher is how teenagers refuse to read books. When does the disconnect start? They lose curiosity, empathy, and their vocabulary stagnates. Anyone have success encouraging teens to read?

“The Spellshop” is a cozy fantasy that reminds me not to be so anxious. As I was reading I thought the main character should just relax and be more open to people. It’s funny because I can’t relax and I rarely trust anyone. 😂

If you are a federal worker being offered a buyout, I would advise against taking it.

Of course, this is a personal decision for everyone and it’s your choice.

But these offers are a rush job. The legality is questionable and this admin does not keep to its word.

They aren’t firing for a reason.

History tidbit for the day: George Washington mandated vaccines for soldiers during the American Revolution. They love referencing the founding fathers until it doesn’t serve their purpose.

The Inspectors General refuse to leave until the action is taken legally, which they do not believe it was, and neither do senators like Chuck Grassley. This is what not backing down looks like.
