I wish that disdain for history was new, but the court was loudly wrong in the Dred Scott case, claiming that Black people had never been citizens in any state (there were Black citizens in a majority of states at the founding of the country) and couldn't vote, which they could in some states.

Democrats should respond with if you do that we're invoking section 2 of the 14th amendment and knocking 50 southern Republican seats out on day 1 of the new Congress.

Texas is way too close for how hard they gerrymandered it, especially if Dems see double digit shifts towards them. Florida is much closer than Texas is and their Caribbean Republican block in South Florida is incensed at Trump's immigration policy. If they do this, Dems are going to fuck them up.

When you're too casually genocidal for Churchill, it's really a lot. He was really a lot.

They're hoping the Callias decision lets them steal 20 seats in the south, regardless of the fact that nomination windows are closing rapidly.

And I am going to laugh until I lose consciousness if Texas gerrymandered itself into a blue wave election. That state isn't red enough to try and grab as many seats as they did if Democrats get a 13% swing.

You guys call leftists purity testers and all this other shit. You call us pinkos and denigrate us and extremists and all this.

We want your fucking kids to go to school and eat healthy meals and grow up and be safe and have jobs and not be institutionally murdered by the state.

Humble yourselves.

Smalls remained in Beaufort and as late as the early 1900s was able to prevent 2 black prisoners from being lynched by a mob by threatening the Sheriff and Mayor that he had accomplices that would burn the town down if the prisoners died. The prisoners lived.

Despite their political rivalries, Murray, Smalls and Miller fought very hard against disfranchisement in South Carolina in the 1890s and early 1900s but only Smalls remained in the South after Jim Crow fully snapped down after the turn of the Century. Murray went to Chicago and Miller to Philly.

Thomas Miller was GW Murray's predecessor from South Carolina! He was a light skinned man from coastal South Carolina and was in Robert Small's downstate faction that controlled the Republican Party in South Carolina until Murray's upcountry faction took it away.

This is perhaps the Negroes' temporary farewell to the American Congress, but let me say, Phoenix-like he will rise up some day and come again. These parting words are in behalf of an outraged, heart-broken, bruised and bleeding, but God-fearing people; faithful, industrious, loyal, rising people – full of potential force

It's possible, but White was fairly young when the war ended, (born in 1852), so his time in power happened after Democrats had taken control back in the South. White is pretty famous, as those things go, for his farewell speech in Congress, so it's still entirely possible he might have!

(The newspaper article is actually wrong that he was the last Black congressman before Jim Crow. North Carolina's George White served until 1901. He died in 1918, so Murray outlived him, but even if that's what the article meant, Lynch outlived them both living until after the start of World War 2!)

When Murray died, his neighbor and friend John Roy Lynch, former Congressman from Mississippi and retired army officer, gave his eulogy. Murray was interesting for a number of reasons and not well remembered these days.

And he was in Chicago because he was driven from South Carolina in 1903 by a fabricated fraud charge involving leasing land to Black farmers. The local white power structure didn't want Black farmers to control their own land, or someone like Murray to become wealthy.

"The right of the minority... is to draw its salaries and its function is to make a quorum". Speaker Thomas Reed

If Democrats get a majority, they need to make the Republicans live that. Don't let them do anything at all. No bills, no nominees. Nothing.
