I led a lettering workshop tonight and I’m just so impressed with these beautiful greeting cards everyone made with only a couple hours of practice! 🙌

A purple cooler sitting outside a kitchen.

Fridge is refusing to be cold (you had one job!) so now I get to pretend I’m camping inside my house. Fingers crossed that after defrosting the fridge for a day it will come back to life 👻🤞

Yep. I moved to Affinity years ago as well and have not felt the need to return to Adobe. I live in Designer & Publisher. I took the new Affinity for a spin though and it can't open InDesign files (Publisher can) plus a couple other glitches so I will be sticking with their V2 for a while.

Women-owned, Vancouver-based, variable-first. @arcanetype.com makes fonts with real warmth — Tofino, Stornoway, Amberwood. Indie foundries like this are the future.

Articles that more deeply make observations about the way we live our daily lives and offer more global perspectives used to come across my feeds all the time, but not so much now. Anyway, I feel like I’ve been thinking more these days and this newsletter has played a part in sparking that.

I had started to believe that because I had moved into a new season of my life with a more defined career and parenting commitments that I just didn’t have the time to reflect and think deeply about stuff. I am now realizing that it wasn’t about lack of time but instead a lack of inspiration.

So a while ago one of my fonts was featured in this newsletter so I checked it out. Long story short, it’s thoughtful observations like this that remind me of the old internet and take me back to a time where I had more real thoughts and conversations.

That’s so special! I have a toy chest made by my grandfather that has similar weight (and is now filled with my own kids stuffed animals). Making something that can last into the generations after yours feels good.

Typefaces may not physically weigh much (at least not since the days of metal type) but putting in the time and effort to shape them makes them feel heavy, substantial. The bigger the character set, the more robust the family of styles, the heavier it feels and the more satisfying it is to make.

5 minute dungeon! When we play with the kids we make it a bit easier by adding a few more minutes, or leaving out the timer entirely

Great stuff happening in the latest @glyphsapp.com release! Also, I love how entertaining the release notes are 😂, so many little gems like "...And if you understood what this means, you are probably that guy who created and sent us that edge case in the first place." glyphsapp.com/news/glyphs-...

Also, how gorgeous are these shapes and color palette!? This game is pretty!!!!

I am so happy about this! As a type designer, sometimes while drawing a more obscure character like a dagger we really wonder if anyone will ever find it and use it. Seeing it exist like this means it was worth making ♥️

I feel like this chart applies to discourse about most things (not just limited to discussions around AI)—it’s a good reminder to think about how you are discussing things with folks around you.

New look! This name change is coinciding with the foundry’s 5th birthday and to celebrate, I thought I would confuse everyone about my identity (I joke, I joke). Moving forward, we will be called Arcane Type Foundry and we believe fonts are magic!

Been making a lot of melty beads (or fuse beads, perler beads, Hama beads). I am getting better at ironing them evenly 😅

Two o characters in a handwritten style with an underscore between them so they look a bit like an unimpressed face.

Sometimes you are just happily working on a typeface and it looks at you funny.

The mirror of a blue car is in the center of the frame. The mirror is broken but a hand-held mirror with “Quo” written on it is taped to the car mirror by the handle.

Sometimes other people make cool things and I wonder why I didn’t make a similar cool thing that I had an idea for but haven’t got around to it yet. Then I realize they are a team of 12 people and I am just me.

Wish I could do that “mirror image” spell and my copies could all work for me.
