NEW: IDP responds to @governor.ny.gov's proposal enabling law enforcement to use "probably cause" as a criteria for turning immigrant NYers over to ICE.

TL;DR This proposal would incentivize and exacerbate racial profiling in arrests and likely increase unlawful arrests.

The approval by inspectors means nothing in the jail that killed Alexis Cardenas, our client, a husband & father of four who should never been jailed in the first place.

NPAP's case is one of many exposing Harris County Jail's violence, overcrowding, neglect & abuse.

On this year's #TransDayofVisibility the intersection of state violence against trans people & ICE's mass deportation machine is alarmingly clear. From the Prairieland defendants to our client Maria Ordoñez-Vargas, trans people are being denied medical care, dignity & rights.

URGENT PHONE ZAP
Two high priority demands

Communication with legal counsel is a right! Tablet access now!

Right now, defendants are in an urgent post trial window where they need to be in contact with their lawyers who are filing motions.

Due to distance, this contact is primarily done through the tablets. The barrier is that there are 40 people in the pod and only 2 tablets with video capability.

We need the facility to fix the broken tablets so that our people can get adequate legal counsel in preparation for crucial deadlines this week.

Get Rowan out of med seg and away from illness exposure!

On March 24th, Rowan Gibson was abruptly told to gather their things and that they were being moved to med seg without reason.

Hours later, the lawyers got the reason: the facility is claiming that Rowan, Mari, Rebecca, Liz, and Savanna being together is a security risk.

Now, Rowan is being held with people who are ill, exposing them to illness too. This is clearly punishment for the months they've spent advocating and fundraising for other incarcerated people.

We need Rowan returned to gen pop now for their health and safety.

My name is _________________. I am calling out of concern for Joy Gibson who is being held in medical segregation despite not having any medical ailments. She is being held around people who are ill, putting Joy at risk of becoming sick too.

The facility is claiming that housing her and her codefendants together is a security risk but have provided no evidence that this is a risk. This is a political persecution. We demand that Joy be moved back to general population, Pod C. Joy has done nothing wrong!

When will Joy be returned to gen pop?

My name is ________. I am calling on behalf of the defendants held in C pod, who are having limited access to communication with the outside world.

Many people urgently need to be in contact with their lawyers and having only 2 fully functioning tablets for 40 people doesn't fulfill this need. There needs to be 12 fully functioning tablets. We demand that the broken tablets be removed and repaired. In their place, there needs to be more tablets with video call capability available to those who need it!

When can they video call their counsel?

'Wandering officers' widespread across NC police agencies Limited data makes wandering officers hard to count in NC, but CPP identified nearly 700 current cops whose previous agencies fired them.

North Carolina exemplifies an alarming pattern: officers who face discipline for misconduct are resigning...only to be rehired by another law enforcement agency.

TSA currently employs about 50,000 screening agents. ICE currently employs about 22,000 agents.

This threat won’t solve the TSA funding issue, and it would also come at the expense of further degrading his already unpopular & incompetent immigration program

First of all, maybe TSA agents are quitting because they don’t want to sleep in their cars since they can’t afford gas.

Second, ICE agents are barely trained to be ICE agents. Now they’re being put in airports to do TSA’s job with zero training. What could go wrong?

PAY TSA AGENTS, NOT ICE.

Just 1 week after the 6th anniversary of her murder. These officers killed Breonna Taylor during a botched, no-knock raid that uncovered no drugs.

From a DOJ that earlier this month quietly rescinded no-knock warrants. This is not justice. This is not a dept that is interested in accountability.

Leqaa Kordia was released today after a year in federal immigration detention.

As S.T.O.P.’s Eleni Manis and Michelle Dahl write, her detention was enabled by data-sharing between the NYPD and ICE: "It's the predictable consequence of New York City’s out-of-control surveillance infrastructure."

Thinking about the people & lawyers that dismissed the alarm about Antifa being designated as a domestic terrorist group. The government just used “material support” for “antifa materials” & “domestic terrorism” to convict 9 people in Prairieland.

New Jersey Cities Are Pressing Resistant State Officials for Civilian Police Oversight Local officials in Newark, Jersey City, and Trenton want civilian agencies that can investigate police and issue subpoenas. But they keep running into the state’s Democratic leaders.

Newark’s civilian oversight board works with residents who report police misconduct and has advocated for the state to give them stronger powers. “It gives folks a stake in what is happening in the police department,” says one of the board’s commissioners.
