My recommendation would be to download Magic Online instead, and checking out Pauper. It's a format with only Common cards allowed, leading to slower paced play with decks that are surprisingly powerful.

Even back in the days, I always found the square bases to be an eyesore in need of a better solution. When I build my stuff now, I've got no qualms about putting them on anachronistic round bases even though I'm a bit of a purist otherwise. 40mm squares were often a bit too large anyway.
