my dad negotiated with the headteacher at my primary school for me to be allowed to wear trousers, which had previously been against the uniform policy - that was London in 1992

Everything I've seen over the last ~20 agrees - the most high performing teams broadly following XP practices (if not in name, at least in practice)

"We appointed FF Studio as our partners...This can’t-be-topped team wore their expertise lightly. They operated thoroughly inside the tent as we’d hoped...They delivered at pace, with high standards and most importantly, any problems were shared problems that we figured out together."

saw this image from Blue Lug in Tokyo and it just made my heart sing, aren't bikes and all the beautiful things people make for them such a thing of beauty

I had the same issue a few years ago and landed on www.richersounds.com/dali-spektor... but obviously depends on whether you're looking at active/passive, smart or not, etc (these are passive and very much not smart)

In 2025, I thought a lot about becoming a queer parent – I thought a lot about that A new anonymous essay published every day in December in the countdown to Christmas.

another great piece from @amymcnichol.bsky.social's annual series. the cognitive load involved in becoming a queer parent is immense. www.ithoughtaboutthatalot.com/2025/becomin...

Yeah, it's rough. Happy to share what we learned, if useful - though I imagine you know most of it already Ann.

‘Livid’ British Library staff vote to strike over pay - Research Professional News Two-week walkout planned on second anniversary of major cyberattack

I hope they get great people too but as someone with a really tiny amount of insider knowledge, paying below market rates has hindered them bringing in experienced computer-types in the past (and seems like a pattern for non-computer-types too www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-c...)

And also utterly infuriating to see a £60k salary against head of cyber security there given the past few years.

Nice one for getting through your first year and writing it up. Here’s to year 2!

I've almost done this a few times and then get sucked back into the land of GDocs. And as for how Google Calendar invitations (from others) don't seem to play nicely with others...proper monopoly stuff. What's your new stack?

Oh I didn’t read it as pile on, just interpreted your read as genuinely considering it an ethical prioritisation process! soz if caused consternation

5 months ago 0 0 1 0

I reckon you're reading way too far into it. Small-ish cohort and departments who want to co-operate = decision made (I don't know for sure, but that's my rough guess). Anything ethical is posthoc rationalisation.

Roger. Yeah, I meant what’s your general review. I too have recently entered the Exchange universe and am trying to work out how to maintain soooome elements of my usual workflow.
