This is such a lovely contextualizing of Rob Reiner's filmmaking legacy, by @rilaws.bsky.social

Other than the American Canto excerpt, is there evidence of any other reporting, editing or writing that Olivia Nuzzi did for Vanity Fair while in their employ? 🤔🤔

The making and unmaking of Beya Alcaraz: A strange and terrible saga A near-total vetting failure by the mayor’s office put a political neophyte in an impossible position. It was a crucial misstep for Daniel Lurie.

The power and importance of local journalism: SF mayor's office repeatedly ignored a resident's warnings about his hastily appointed supervisor, so @missionlocal.org @sfstandard.com @sfchronicle.com and @sfexaminer.bsky.social did their homework for them.

Staff at 3 Alaska newspapers quit after owners give in to pressure from Republican lawmaker Much of the staff behind the Kenai Peninsula Clarion, the Homer News and the Juneau Empire resigned Monday, citing owner Carpenter Media's decision to edit a story without consulting them.

Much respect to local journalists Erin Thompson, Jeff Helminiak, Jake Dye and Chloe Pleznac for making the principled and incredibly challenging choice -- especially in this economy, especially in this industry downturn.

In this climate, integrity is heroism.

KPop Demon Hunters keeps slaying

Extremely honored to be invited on @vox.com's excellent Today, Explained podcast to discuss some of the ideas on my Substack post about #KPopDemonHunters. Vox's explanatory journalism has been a major inspiration for my newsletter, so this meant a lot to me.

UPDATE: The man ICE violently arrested has been identified as Job Arias-Mendoza. Two weeks ago he published a video to his social media accounts of ICE handcuffing a man in front of a liquor store—it has more than 200,000 views on TikTok. streetcarsuburbs.news/arias-mendoz...

More workers were abducted today than pretty much any other single day over the course of the months-long federal occupation of Los Angeles.

We are still under siege. There is no other choice but to organize and fight back. Look out for one another and defend your neighbors!

Hehe I know, if there's one thing I know about my friend Jon it's that you are a realist (cynic?) to the end. I used your setup question to plug my thread!

Unfortunately, I think not! Corporations are inherently conservative and I think a minority needs to be choked out for nearly 10 minutes on camera during a pandemic for companies to temporarily, proactively do the "woke" thing.

But if the past couple of months have taught us nothing else, it's that we cannot trust corporations to defend our democracy.

Prop. 22: Here's how your L.A. neighborhood voted on the gig worker measure Uber, Lyft and other gig companies spent millions of dollars to shape California labor law in their image. The result: support from voters in neighborhoods as varied as Beverly Hills and Compton.

Truthfully, I'm not optimistic that this is a fight that the people can win, because if you thought the record $200M that Uber, Lyft and DoorDash spent to strike down CA Prop 22 was a lot, the conglomerates can and will easily spend BILLIONS to keep their monopolies.

On Jimmy Kimmel: It's Time to Destroy the Censorship Machine and Repeal the Telecommunications Act of 1996 In 1996, Bill Clinton set the stage for what Donald Trump is doing now by creating a censorship machine of consolidated media, broadband, and tech firms. It's time to break it apart.

Please read Matt Stoller's Substack for a compelling argument for repealing the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

Although the suspension will be lifted tomorrow (no word yet on whether Nexstar or Sinclair stations will carry the show), now is the time to sow the seeds of petitioning our legislators to reverse the massive consolidation in our sector.

Understanding the Quiet Part(s) Behind Jimmy Kimmel's Suspension A tangled web of media consolidation, authoritarian encroachment and online nihilsm.

BREAKING: @jimmykimmellive.bsky.social's suspension lifts this Tuesday, but the work to protect our media from becoming tools of authoritarianism continues.

I wrote about the context behind the whole affair in my most recent Substack post, over the weekend:

Trump Grieves By Talking About $200 Million Ballroom, MAGA Hits New Lows & Guillermo at the Emmys YouTube video by Jimmy Kimmel Live

This is what Trump's FCC, abetted by ABC, is silencing Kimmel over: one sentence (at the 2m mark) that says nothing against Kirk and is simply casting doubt on the government's narrative that his killer was leftist (when all credible evidence indicates he was far right).

Late stage capitalism cooperating in lockstep with an authoritarian regime. This should chill everyone to the bone.

7 months ago 1 0 1 0

First Colbert, now Kimmel.

ABC has pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air "indefinitely," not for inappropriately celebrating anyone's death but rather for accurately pointing out the government's attempt to portray Charlie Kirk's killer as leftist instead of far far right.

Not wishing a shooting death on anyone, not even this guy.

Gun control now, tomorrow, yesterday.

I am also genuinely sorry that Kirk has died. I wish he had lived and experienced true repentance. Praying that we all take the right lessons away from this tragedy.

Terror on repeat: A rare look at the devastation caused by AR-15 shootings Photos, videos and personal accounts show how the AR-15 has given assailants the power to instantly turn everyday gathering places into zones of gruesome violence.

I won't watch the Charlie Kirk video because I have no bloodlust, but that level of point-blank carnage is what happens to our kids in classrooms, except with bodies that small, they are oft mutilated beyond recognition. We must end gun violence, for everyone.
