Inaugural Renal SIG meeting in Jan 2021

When I trained in genetic counseling nearly 10 years ago, nephrogenetics wasn't a defined specialty. Creating the NSGC Renal SIG allowed us to build an international community which continues to grow today. I'm so grateful to everyone I've learned from- the future is bright! 🧬🫘

MYTH: Genetic testing cost is a barrier for patients πŸ™…πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ
Many patients pay little to nothing out of pocket for testing, but may gain huge insights into the cause of their disease 🧬 A genetic counselor can help!

& yes, lupus can be thought of as genetic, yet we tend to think of it as having complex/multifactorial inheritance because the genetics of autoimmune disease is really complicated & doesn't often conform to a nice Mendelian pattern w/ a known genetic basis πŸ₯΄

Genetic results are used in some cases for things like embryo selection to prevent familial disease, but we don't yet have cures or gene therapy for most genetic conditions. Still important to know if a kidney disease is genetic, as this can change how someone is treated/screened & for family mbrs

If you're born with the genetic disease, you will always be at risk of developing symptoms, & some are unavoidable. But, not everyone with PKD will have the same health risks as a lot depends on the type of mutation, healthcare access, medication, lifestyle and family history risk factors

Hi, so exposure of a certain amount of some chemicals/medications can cause harm to fetal development, absolutely. These changes don't get passed on to the next generation in DNA in the same way that a genetic condition like polycystic kidney disease does, which is more my wheelhouse!
