Not all experiences are equally visible. Autism is more frequently diagnosed in males, but this may partly reflect the underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis of autistic females, whose profiles can be different or subtler.
Today is World Autism Awareness Day.
Moving beyond awareness means embracing acceptance- and recognizing autism as a diverse spectrum.
SIRF-UP is an @eu-sabv.bsky.social COST Action initiative to support ethical review bodies assess sex-inclusivity in animal research. Using female and male animals should be the default to reduce the total number of animals used and produce results that are generalisable to the whole population.
SIRF-UP, Sex Inclusive Research Framework - Understanding and Practice, from EU-SABV COST Action. Icons representing different steps of the SIRF-UP initiative: Pre-engagement survey, support pack, apply the SIRF, post-engagement survey and stay involved.
If you are involved in an ethical review body anywhere in the world (including AWERBs, IACUCs or Animal Welfare Committees), you can get involved in SIRF-UP. Answer a short survey, receive a support pack to apply the Sex Inclusive Research Framework and share your feedback: sabv.eu/article/sirf...
The series aims to advance understanding and best practices for integrating sex and gender perspectives, through webinars covering topics from biological impacts and preclinical study design to historical perspectives and applications of AI.

โOne of our goals is to take out the fear of performing experiments that consider sex differences and show researchers that it does not necessarily mean double the work or double the number of animals.โ
