One thing that my preferred stupid franchise does really well is regularly having a new point-of-view character, so while you get a lot more out of it if you know Maul's arc, Shadowlord is parseable just fine because the actual heart of the show is the new Jedi and the detective. Just do that.

I actually think it's fine to be like, "we're not going to introduce any of these characters so if you haven't been keeping up you'll just have to parse it yourself," but "we made a new scene for a 10+ year old film that you need to see" is both stupid and reads like your movie just isn't legible.
