Despite Donald Trumpâs best efforts, the US got more electricity from renewables than from fossil gas last month. nationalobserver.com/newsletters/zeâŠ

Building a coalition of the willing, breaking deadlock, planning the transition without blockers at the table: it hit me that no matter what happens, Santa Marta is already a success. This conversation was unthinkable a few years ago. Overton window? Wide open

âSanta Marta is different, it is a space conceived and led by the nations most impacted. We will not be at the back of the room, but setting the agenda at the head of the table" -Maina Talia

"Petrostate dynamics take hold not through sudden shifts, but through gradual normalization. Decisions that once would have been contested become accepted. In petrostates, oil and gas slowly poison our politics."
Great analysis from @tzeporah.bsky.social
Itâs an honour to be in Vanuatu right now working with Pacific leaders on their plans for Santa Marta and the upcoming fossil fuel phase out conference.
Their fearless leadership continues to be a beacon for a Just Transition

Opinion: Canada is drifting toward petrostate politics, even in B.C. - www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

This is how petrostate politics takes hold.
Not all at once â but step by step.
What once felt unacceptable becomes ânecessary.â
Donât accept it. Name it. Hold them accountable. The energy transition is happening. Letâs shape it and not let it be shaped here by vested interests and disaster.

Recent conflicts show the truth:
fossil fuels donât make us secure â they make us vulnerable
đȘ Price shocks
đłïž Supply disruptions
đ Inflation
And at the same time: more fires, floods and extreme heat.
3/
Weâre told this is about âthe economy.â
But look closer: profits are concentrated in oil & gas companies while costs are shared by everyone else
Higher prices, instability, and growing climate damage.

Fracking has surged. LNG expansion is accelerating.
We will blow past our legislated emissions targets.
And public money continues to flow to one of the most profitable industries in history.
This isnât a transition. Itâs entrenchment.
BC was supposed to be different.
A climate leader. A progressive counterweight to fossil fuel politics.
But today, itâs becoming something else:
a case study in petrostate politics.

Some highlights from my Cambodia trip last month.
There is so much climate leadership that brings the needed energy for the Santa Marta conference at the end of April đ±
We live in unstable times but history is made by those who show up. Itâs clear that these women leaders are showing up.

2015 to 2025 were the hottest 11 years ever measured. Our oceans have absorbed this heat but there is no respite in sight.
Burning oil, gas, and coal have pushed our earth beyond its limits.

Cambodia has been rich and inspiring, I'm already thinking about returning. People have been so kind. The food, culture and art is breathtaking. It's a joy to work with a nation state focused on a fast fossil fuel phase out. Their participation and perspective strengthen the Fossil Fuel Treaty
Angkor Wat at sunrise on the Equinox. Epic ending to a truly amazing trip to Cambodia.
My experience on the Sólheimajökull glacier is one I won't soon forget. Néfur's resonant voice mixed with audio recordings of the dynamic glacier itself will haunt me.
These guardians of life, the glaciers, are canaries in the coal mine of a rapidly warming world.
Hereâs the glaring truth that #BigOil doesnât want you to know: the cost of doing nothing is much higher than the cost of taking climate action.

Such an incredible, devastating and inspiring experience in Iceland.
This piece demonstrates how the country can lead climate solutions by turning its success in the field of renewable energy into a global responsibility.

Only a small fraction of greenhouse gases is needed to create most of the greenhouse effect, because these gases absorb specific wavelengths of the heat the Earth emits, states PIK scientist @rahmstorf.bsky.social in new explainer on climate change mythsđ

Unlike previous oil wars renewable energy is now available at scale. It's distributed, diversified and resilient. And solar panels donât blow up; once they're in place you donât need ships to constantly feed them to make energy.
The sun is looking like a pretty stable energy source right now.

Drones are hitting Saudi oil fields, Qatar halting LNG production, Iran putting a squeeze on the Strait of Hormuz and US attack on Iranâs Kharg Island oil terminals-- all of it should be a wake up call that fossil fuel phase out is a national and energy security priority.

Reykjavik is once again demonstrating what it means to be a climate leader!
Iceland stands on the frontlines of the climate crisis and this endorsement sends a clear message: addressing fossil fuel production must be part of the solution.
A delegation from the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative gathered at SĂłlheimajökull glacier or a public artistic tribute in collaboration with Glacier Nation and Icelandic artist NĂ©fur, honouring whatâs at stake and underscoring the urgency of adopting a Fossil Fuel Treaty to protect glaciers worldwide.
