🔥 Thank you, Rep. Ayanna Pressley @ayannapressley.bsky.social for exposing at a national level what we are fighting against in Iowa. What is happening here CANNOT become the national model. www.instagram.com/reel/DFyFVrA...

The fact that refusing to take down an “everyone is welcome” sign is an act of courageous resistance but it is. Payout out to West Ada, Idaho 6th grade teacher Sarah Inama and the students who rallied to support her. And to the other teachers @nrdz.bsky.social and I … m.youtube.com/watch?v=Jsn3...
This administration doesn’t like “malicious compliance” … just maliciousness.

so now we all have to suffer not just the loss of vaccines but the drain of medical professionals away from a state that is backpedaling so hard and fast away from progress it's giving me whiplash.
STOP. IMPOSING. YOUR. IGNORANCE. ON. EVERYONE. ELSE.
Not sure how punishing doctors for using their tools to save lives and prevent pandemics is in any way promoting public health ... but apparently someone emailed a state senator about how she thinks an mRNA vaccine injured her ...
Another gem of a bill this session proposes to criminalize people who administer mRNA vaccines. That sounds like it couldn't possibly be true, but it is. SF360 passed out of the Health & Human Services subcommittee on Monday. www.iowapublicradio.org/state-govern...

I’m sick with grief … I’m worried about loved ones targeted by this and other xenophobic, racist laws who will likely leave and worried even more about them if they stay … I’m furious and disgusted and sad. I’m also resolved and grateful for being in community today with so many others who care.
Iowa just fast-tracked the removal of gender identity from civil rights. It’s the first state in the nation to do so and I know these legislators aren’t done. www.tiktok.com/t/ZT2uBodUa/
To disrupt dominant, hegemonic, settler-colonial cultural norms, we need pedagogies that forward love, compassion, empathy, and a new conceptualizing of culture as alive and constantly in construction." —Timothy San Pedro (2018) 💗
It requires a pedagogy that helps students see how Whiteness operates as a race and opens up conversations about the systemic racism in the United States. ...
It may mean seeing the humanity in those who
have long dehumanized us by easing others’ eyes while adjusting to a new reality inclusive of a more complete story of us. ...
scream for the lights to be turned back off. [Culturally sustaining pedagogy] requires that we acknowledge this process as painful, and as necessary, to see that our
liberation is tied together. ...
"By centering stories often held in the margins...norms that were once unseen are now made visible. For some, this process is painful—like flipping on the lights in a pitch-dark room. Some may cower, shield themselves from the light, close their eyes tightly, ...
Historical amnesia fuels authoritarianism. People not knowing the history of equity work in schools makes it easier to attack. We also miss out inspiration for our own activism. The 1968 Blowouts in LA and the birth of ethnic studies matters now more than ever. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHrs...

The Iowa Civil Rights Removal Act (HSB242 legiscan.com/IA/bill/HSB2...) is a breathtakingly cruel piece of proposed legislation that removes transgender Iowans’ civil rights protections, adds restroom and birth certificate restrictions, and redefines sex to erase trans people. Contact reps NOW.

It's refreshing to witness the refusal to comply—especially when existing law backs it up! Institutions do not have to cower and scurry to ask how high when Trump says "jump." We can say NO.
