You know what, let's do the Annual Mister Global National Costume thread tonight after all. Usual rules apply - this is all in fun, this isn't about the contestants looks or making fun of them, it's about the costumes and appreciating them (or, you know, making fun of them...)

Around 2007 I was running the tech side of a site called Illustration Friday, created by @penelope-dullaghan.bsky.social. We’d post a weekly topic and artists would submit illustrations for it. Our sysadmin noticed we were getting a lot of unusual activity from a single IP address located in Iran. 🧵

I think more people should be aware that "astronaut" is Greek for "starsailor".

Another trip to Florida complete.

A highlight was getting to see so many sandhill cranes; they've always been a favorite of mine, and not something I see often in PA.

Mongolian Girl Has a Laugh with her Camel.

The little girl’s name is Butedmaa and she was just 5 when this picture was taken in 2003 by photographer Han Chengli, who titled it “Inner Mongolian Child”. #photooftheday

Four very realistic-looking replica desserts. From the left: tropical fruits including pineapple, kiwi and melon in a tall glass dish, then strawberries, ice cream and cream, then chocolate ice cream sundae with nuts and dark chocolate straws. Lastly, some kind of egg custard with a swirl of cream and a glace cherry on top.

Morning. Happy New Year.
A while ago I ran a series of daily tweets about birdsong. The idea was to encourage people to pay attention to the natural sounds around them, and learn to identify birds from their sounds alone (which, after all, is often the only clue you get to their presence).

If you subscribe to Microsoft 365 Personal, the 40% price increase is a con to upsell you AI. Your old plan and price is still there called "Classic" - but only if you try to cancel.

Microsoft should be ashamed if not prosecuted.

Sound Mix: Animals
a design by Marceline Leiman

Setup
• From a deck of cards you have at home, take A-4 in each suit and shuffle them together to form a clue card deck. The other cards are not used in this game.
• Remove 4 cards from the clue card deck, kept facedown. They will not be used this game.
• Randomly pick a start player to take the first turn.

How to Play
On your turn, draw 1 clue card from the deck. The rank of that card points to a location in the grid.
Using the animals above and to the left of that location, you will make a sound combining the two. It must be a single noise, which you may repeat and/or alternate in volume.

Ask the other players to close their eyes, then make the sound. They must work together to guess which location your clue card points to.

Reveal the clue card. If they are correct, fill in that location's bubble in the grid with a pencil. If they are incorrect, fill an X bubble below the grid. If there are no more X bubbles to fill OR the team is able to guess every clue card before running out of X bubbles, the game ends!

Count each filled bubble in the grid as 1 point. Try your best to correctly guess all 12 clue cards for the max score!
